Horseshoe Crabs in Coastal Habitats
June 26-29, 2002
Adult Field School sponsored by the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary
Instructors: Dr. Robert B. Barlow, Dr. Daniel G. Gibson, and Brenda J.
Boleyn
A unique opportunity to learn about horseshoe crab ecology, research, and
human use is being offered this summer by the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife
Sanctuary. Cape Cod offers outstanding sites for the study of horseshoe
crabs during their spawning season. An exploration of the habitat and
coastal interactions of the horseshoe crab will provide insight into the
natural history and life cycle of this extraordinary animal, its
relationship to shorebirds and other occupants of the intertidal zone, and
its dependence upon tides and beaches. Dr. Daniel Gibson, Dr. Robert Barlow
and Brenda Boleyn will be leading this 3.5 day course for adults and provide
engaging field tirps, activities, and discussion. Field trips will include
a tour of North Monomoy Island to learn about Dr. Barlow's research, a visit
to Associates of Cape Cod, laboratory work with Dr. Gibson, and field trips
to local beaches to witness spawning.
This course is part of Wellfleet Bay's Cape Cod Field Schools. Others
courses in this series include "Box Turtle and Terrapin Research", "Critical
Habitats of the Coast" and "Butterflies of Cape Cod". For more information
about these and other courses you can contact Melissa Lowe at the Wellfleet
