Summer Internship in
NON-PROFIT PROGRAMMING & PUBLIC RELATIONS

The Nantucket Maria Mitchell Association (MMA), a science and history
based education, preservation, and research institution is offering a
summer internship in non-profit programming and public relations. The
Intern will gain valuable experience in many aspects of non-profit
administration, including educational outreach and programming, public
relations, special events planning, and office management. The Intern
will have the opportunity to assist parents in choosing classes for
their children, will field general inquiries about programs and events,
and will assist in publicizing the Association’s summer activities.
Specific duties will include:
-Working with parents to register children for summer classes;
-Updating publicity materials, and working with local media to insure
proper listings and coverage;
-Writing, distributing, and following up on press releases;
-Assisting in event planning and implementation for activities
surrounding the Association’s Centennial Celebration;
-Handling walk-in traffic and telephone inquiries.
Position requirements:
-A strong interest in non-profit administration, particularly in
organizations dealing with education, preservation, and research;
-Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
-Ability to work well in a busy office environment, and handle multiple
tasks;
-Proficiency in Microsoft Word (experience with FileMaker Pro a plus);
-At least one year of college, or relevant work experience.
This is an excellent opportunity for a student considering a career in
the non-profit or business world. The Intern will be exposed to many
areas of this dynamic organization, and will participate fully in our
busy summer program. The Maria Mitchell Association is an exciting place
to work, drawing students, interns, and employees from many disciplines
and from all across the country.
This is a paid internship that will run from late May until late August
(dates negotiable). The Association is also happy to work with field
work or career development offices for students seeking academic credit
for the internship.
