Gessner appears as part of the Monday Super Series: Summer Evenings of Arts and Ideas, a collaboration of several local non-profit organizations including the Maria Mitchell Association. Gessner, an avid birdwatcher and nature writer, details his day-to-day experience with the endangered ospreys, telling a story of perseverance and hope in the natural environment of Cape Cod. Gessner's account of the ospreys chronicles a crucial effort to restore endangered species in New England threatened by human impact. With years of experience on Cape Cod, Gessner speaks with a local passion for birds and the outdoors. Named one of the Boston Globe best non-fiction books of 2001, "Return of the Osprey" is a compelling local story, with Gessner's skillful writing probing deeper than the study of birds to an exploration of self and nature.
