Just a reminder…..

WHOI Sea Grant’s annual lecture series, “Oceans Alive,” kicks off its
14th season tonight with presentations and posters led by local science
fair winners. Presenters will include:

- Rachel Allen, a sophomore at Falmouth Academy, who will discuss her
comparison of the accuracy of barometric pressure sensors
- Michaela LeBlanc, a junior at Falmouth Academy, will present her
nitrate and phosphate pollution study of Crocker Neck Marsh
- Adam Rago, a junior at Falmouth High School, will discuss how he
exposed mealworms, fruit flies, and yeast to pesticides from St. John’s
Wort and marigolds and then exposed them to ultraviolet light to
determine toxicity levels
- Jason Prapas, a senior at Falmouth High School, will explain how he
designed and constructed a calorimeter to collect data and determine
whether cow and chicken manure samples could be used as an efficient
energy source
- Kyle Hunt, a Mashpee High School senior, will discuss the best
shipping procedures for toadfish
- Matthew Surabian, a junior from Mashpee High School, will present his
project in which he increased growth rates of plants by subjecting them
to a state of magnetostriction established between two electromagnets
with AC voltage

The series will continue on Tuesday, April 30, with a presentation and
book signing by David Gessner, author of “Return of the Osprey: A Season
of Flight and Wonder,” and on Tuesday, May 7, with a presentation by
WHOI scientist Ann Mulligan titled “Glacial History and Contaminant
Transport on Cape Cod.”

The lectures, which are free and open to the public, start at 7:00 p.m.
in Redfield Auditorium, located on the corner of Water and School
