Draft Agenda for Marine Habitat Characterization and
Mapping Workshop
(Sponsored by NOAA and the Gulf of Maine Council for
the Marine Environment)

Workshop Purpose:  To develop a (five year) regional
strategy to map and characterize marine habitats in
the Gulf of Maine.

Objectives:

To bring together marine benthic habitat
researchers, users and potential users of marine
habitat information to improve coordination on
marine characterization and mapping initiatives.

To test and implement the ICES/EUNIS habitat
framework in the Gulf of Maine.

Audience:  Marine resource managers, marine habitat
researchers,consultants, marine educators, outreach
professionals, environmental groups, and marine
technology companies.

When:  October 21st - 23, 2001

Where:  Sebasco Harbor Resort, Sebasco Estates,
Maine

Sunday evening October 21st -

5-7pm - Workshop Registration/Exhibit Set-up

6-8pm - Opening Reception with exhibits and posters
displaying a variety of habitat mapping and
characterization projects (Generous hors d’oeuvres
and Cash Bar)


Monday, October 22, 2001 -

7:30 am: Registration and Breakfast (provided)

8:30 am:  Welcome and Introduction (Susan
Snow-Cotter, Massachusetts Coastal Zone Management)

8:45 am:  NOAA Habitat Mapping Priorities (Jamison
Hawkins, NOAA Deputy Assistant Administrator)

9:15 am: Gulf of Maine Marine Mapping Overview:
What work has been done? (Brian Todd, Natural
Resources Canada)

10:15 am: Break
10:30-12:30 am:  Short project overviews
demonstrating the range of techniques and
technologies used to better understand and map
marine resources in the Gulf of Maine. Each speaker
will discuss the capabilities of the mapping and/or
characterization technique, display graphic
representation of work, discuss the applications and
limitations of the data, and suggest areas of
opportunity.

Video Transects
Bottom Characterization Methodologies
Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR)
Sidescan/Multibeam
Remote Sensing/Satellite Imagary
Pre-installation Marine Surveys
Fishing Vessels-based Research
Laser Line Scan (submerged towed system)

12:30 - Lunch (provided)

1:30 pm: Updates from other related conferences

2:00 - 6 pm  Charge to Break-out Groups  (Susan
Snow-Cotter):   We will divide into break-out groups
to discuss and come to consensus on a series of
questions, which will initiate the development of a
regional marine mapping and characterization
strategy.

6:30 pm - Dinner (provided)

Tuesday, October 23rd -

7:30 am - Breakfast (provided)

8:30 am - Report out from Break-out groups  (Paul
Boudreau will facilitate)

9:15 - 10am - Discussion - what are commonalities,
what are differences?  What are outstanding issues
that need to be resolved or need further work or
resources?

10 - 12pm - Implementation Strategy - What needs to
be done to make this happen?  Funding, coordination,
political support, research opportunities etc.

Food will be brought in for a working lunch

12-2 pm - Discuss specific next steps and who will
lead and be involved in follow-up

2 pm - Adjourn

2-4 pm - Steering Committee meets to rough out
strategy and implementation plan


Accommodations:  Workshop location and
accommodations will be at the Sebasco Harbor Resort
in Sebasco Estates, Maine located just south of
Bath.  All rooms are being offered at a special
conference rate.  Book early. Attached is a hotel
reservation form to be faxed or sent directly to
Sebasco.

Registration Information:  Workshop costs have been
generously covered by NOAA.  Registration will be
strictly first come, first served to the first 80
registrants.  All registration will be via e-mail.
We urge you not to register if you may not attend as
this will not only preclude another person from
attending, but will also result in our paying for
your space despite your not attending.

interest in attending.  Be sure to include your
name, affiliation, address, telephone number and
e-mail address.    Your registration to the workshop
will not be considered complete until your hotel
form and payment is received  by Sebasco Harbor
Resort.
