“The Great Gulf” author David Dobbs
to speak at Mass. Audubon's Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary

David Dobbs, Author of “The Great Gulf: Fishermen, Scientists, and the
Struggle to Revive the World’s Greatest Fishery” will present a slide
lecture enlivened by readings from his book on Wednesday, October 24 at
7:00 p.m. at the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary.

In the decade-long collapse of the New England fishery crisis, fishermen
and government scientists have disagreed bitterly on how many fish are
in the sea (and therefore how many should be caught) -- a disagreement
that lies at the heart of the fishery's collapse and has crippled
efforts to reverse it. In his presentation, author Dobbs tells of his
investigation into the intriguing scientific and perceptual questions
lying at the struggle to revive our country's first and greatest
fishery.

Dobbs spent many weeks on the water with both government fishery
scientists and some of the region's smartest, most principled fishermen;
his slide lecture describes the efforts of these people to resolve their
differences and find a more productive way to see and use this
once-bountiful but now troubled piece of our oceans. Funny, informative,
and marvelously thought-provoking, the lecture introduces a fresh new
perspective not only on our fishery crisis, but on the challenge of how
to see the world clearly.

The lecture will be held at the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary located
in South Wellfleet. Copies of the book will be available for purchase
and signing.

Cost for the lecture is $3 for Mass. Audubon members and $4 for
non-members. Mention this SEMCO posting and get in FREE! Registration
is required however.
