post-doc research position in cooperation with the USGS for Coastal
Hazards Research.

Although the title says Marine Geologist, this is a hazards research
position focusing on coastal processes and storm damage.  Please

Duties:
The Executive Office of Environmental Affairs (EOEA) directs and
coordinates all state policy aimed at preserving and protecting the
natural resources, and the environmental integrity of the Commonwealth.
The Coastal Zone Management Office, part of the Executive Office of
Environmental Affairs, is seeking a Marine Geologist who will conduct
coastal hazards research in cooperation with CZM and United States
Geological Survey in Woods Hole. The purpose of this research will be to
collect information regarding repetitively damaged properties along the
Massachusetts coast and analyze patterns of damage relative to flood
zones, erosion rates, landform type, and the degree of exposure (open
coast vs. protected area). Several levels of damage will be established
to facilitate distinctions between potential causes of minor, moderate
and major structural damage. In addition, the degree of shoreline
armoring will be considered as part of the analysis. The scientist will
be expected to document any correlation between these variables and make
recommendations to CZM, the Massachusetts Land Subject to Coastal Storm
Flowage Task Force and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental
Protection regarding potential policy changes or regulations to balance
development with the preservation and restoration of the resource areas,
ability to dissipate storm wave energy and flooding.

Preferred Qualifications:

The ideal candidate for this position will have a doctoral degree in the
appropriate field; working knowledge of principles of coastal zone
management; working knowledge of national and regional policies and
programs regarding coastal erosion and hazard mitigation including the
National Flood Insurance Program and FEMA regulations as they relate to
coastal areas; and experience related to coastal geology and
geomorphology. Candidate should be proficient in the use of GIS and
statistical analyses. Strong communication (writing, editing, layout)
skills preferred. Applicants must have at least four years of full-time,
or equivalent part-time, technical or professional experience in the
field of environmental science, biology, chemistry, earth science,
environmental health, meteorology, natural science, toxicology or public
health, of which at least two years must have been in a professional
capacity, or any equivalent combination of the required experience and
substitutions must have at least four years of full-time, or equivalent
part-time, technical or professional experience in the field of
environmental science, biology, chemistry, earth science, environmental
health, meteorology, natural science, toxicology or public health, of
which at least two years must have been in a professional capacity, or
