JOB DESCRIPTION
INFORMATION TECHNICAL SUPPORT
For the
Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve

FUNCTIONAL TITLE: EDP Systems Analyst – DEM - Waquoit Bay National
Estuarine Research Reserve
SALARY RANGE: $18.64 - $19.25 per hour (1800 hours/year).
This is a one-year contractual position that can be extended dependent
on funds.

LOCATION: At the Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve on the
South Shore of Cape Cod, Massachusetts in the towns of Falmouth and
Mashpee
OVERVIEW: The Technical Support person will provide technical
assistance, including database and Web page management for the Waquoit
Bay Research Reserve. This position offers a variety of responsibilities
and an opportunity to join a small and active community of dedicated
(and fun) people working together to effect more informed management of
coastal resources.
The Waquoit Bay NERR is one of 26 sites that make up the National
Estuarine Research Reserve System, a federal-state partnership involving
the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the
Massachusetts Department of Environmental Management (DEM).
The mission of the Reserve is to work with communities to provide and
promote improved understanding and management of coastal resources
through integrated programs of research, education and stewardship.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
*Administer and trouble shoot the phone system, including cell phones
*Manage the day-to-day operation of the internal data sharing network
*Manage the Reserve’s small in-house library with assistance from the
administrative support person and volunteers
*Act as a liaison with the DEM Management Information System (MIS)
people
*Work with MIS to insure that the Reserve follows DEM information
technology policies and procedures
*Maintain the Reserve’s Web page
*Perform basic software and hardware problem solving for Reserve staff
*Consult with DEM regional MIS people for more complex problem solving
*Maintain databases including mailing lists, image collections and
library
*Provide basic hardware maintenance
*Work with the Reserve’s Technology Committee to formulate short and
long term technology plans including technology purchases
*Aid in the management of electronic information
*Aid/train staff members in basic computer operations
*Receive training relevant to Reserve technological and administrative
needs, in particular GIS training
*Route, respond to, and manage the Reserve’s general email messages
*Perform other duties, such as answering the phone, taking reservations,
as required
QUALIFICATIONS
Applicant must be well-organized and enjoy working with people.
Candidate must have:
*Significant experience with Windows 2000, NT, and ‘98 operating
systems, databases (MS Access), MS Office applications, basic image
processing
*Understanding of networking concepts
*Ability to trouble shoot basic computer problems
*Excellent written and oral communication skills
*Ability to work on multiple tasks in a busy environment
*Willingness and patience to learn necessary skills and train staff
A successful candidate must be able to work independently and as part of
a team. They will be able to handle several projects at once with a
sense of humor. Preference will be given to someone with GIS experience.
The desire to work in the environmental field is a plus.
