Lectures for Nature's Circle, Spring 2001

Tor Hansen, noted Cape Cod naturalist, nature photographer, artist and
biological illustrator, returns to Falmouth to give a series of lectures
and slide presentations. These presentations are educational and
entertaining, given in Mr. Hansen's dramatic style, colored with his
deeply felt need to share the story of the lives of these fragile
insects ?? moths and butterflies ?? which he has studied for many years,
in order that we understand their place in our environment. Not only
are moths and butterflies beautiful, graceful and colorful, they are
important pollinators of plants and they are part of the food chain,
providing food for birds, dragonflies, salamanders and more.

Every lecture by Tor Hansen informs us of the ecological network which
involves humans, animals and plants. He will have advice on gardening
for butterflies and moths, and habitat conservation. These lectures are
for the general public, as an introduction to our common and valuble
denizens of garden, field and forest. Children are urged to attend, as
Hansen encourages the young to enjoy being part of the conservation of
their environment, and to get an early start on a life-long adventure.

Saturday, May 5, at 10 am, "Butterflies and Moths of the Provincelands,
Hatches Harbor and Evans Field, " at the Falmouth Public Library.
Explore butterfly and moth diversity inhabiting Evan's Field, and sedgey
bogs and dune swales of Hatches Harbor and surrounding Provincelands.
Discover how proper maintenance of a wet meadow supports the Bog Copper,
Silver-bordered Fritillary, Least Skipperling, Appalachian Brown, and
Monarch.
That same afternoon at 1 - 3 pm a field trip to find elfins and azures
in the forest nearby. Please join us. Bring binoculars if you can. We
do not use nets.

Saturday, May 26, 1 - 3 pm. At the Falmouth Public Library. "Cecropia
Moth Ecology, Metamorphosis and Courtship," including the biology of
molting, cocoon spinning, and moth emergence from the cocoon. Resident
of Black Plum and Cherry thickets and the woodland fringe of Cape Cod.
Explore the essential role of pheromones in mating courtship, imperative
to the survival of this regal giant silk moth.
