TOOLS FOR PRESERVING CAPE COD
Understanding the Wetland Protection Act: Inside & Out!
Fridays, January 19, 26, February 2, and 9, 3?4:30 p.m.
Fee: $18 NM/ $12 M for all 4 classes Registration required
Leader: Dennis Murley

This four-part course is designed to provide participants with a greater
understanding of wetland habitats and the regulations governing them,
mainly the Wetland Protection Act. Indoor workshops and outdoor field
trips will focus on the values of various wetlands and their associated
dune systems, flood zones, and buffer zones, as determined by the
state’s Wetland Protection Act. The emphasis will be on the biology of
these ecosystems and how our laws and bylaws can help to preserve them.
This course is especially useful for conservation commissioners,
planners, and citizen activists.

LOSING GROUND?
Preserving Open Space on Cape Cod
Wednesday, February 14, 2 p.m.
Fee: FREE Registration required

What will the future landscape of Cape Cod look like? Since the 1950’s
Cape Cod’s population has grown from 50,000 to over 250,000 residents.
If we were to continue growing and building in compliance with current
town and state regulations, how much land, and what types of habitats,
would be left? What affects would such growth have on water quality and
wildlife populations? Realizing a level of growth is inevitable, how do
we preserve open space while still addressing the need for housing
(especially affordable housing) and industry? How can we use the Cape
Cod Land Bank and the Commuity Preservation Act to benefit our towns?
Joining us for presentatations and discussions will be representatives
from the Cape Cod Commission, Association for the Preservation of Cape
Cod, Woods Hole Research Center, and the Massachusetts Audubon Society’s
Advocacy Department.
