[Sea-mat] GUI multi-axes plotting question

Hello all!

I am very sorry to bulk up your inboxes, but I am hoping someone can
help me with a (hopefully) quick question! I am creating a GUI
for at-sea CTD visualizations, so there are 4 axes with drop downs to
switch variables, depth range limit boxes, etc. I am using GUIDE.

My problem: I would like to have a default set of figures come up
when the GUI is started rather than force the user to use the drop-
downs to see figures. When I try to enter any plotting lines in the
'OpeningFcn' my drop-down boxes no longer appear. When I step
through the script in the debugger, the menus appear as normal. If
I keep all plotting code after the popup Callbacks (ie. so axes are
blank on startup) and only have data loading and handle assignments
in the OpeningFcn, everything works nicely.

I thought I might have been altering necessary handles or the initial
definition of hObject but I can't see where this is happening!?

Any thoughts? Sloppy writing? Fundamental misunderstandings?
Places where I can find better GUI help (the demos are great, but I
can't find anything in the matlab support pages)?

I am attaching a word document with before and after screen shots
(please disregard the lack of colorbars in the latter) and what I
believe are the problematic lines.

I am running R14 on a Windows machine. (The problem does not occur
when I am on my mac running R2006a)

Many thanks!
Lynn Yarmey
