Dear colleagues,

We invite applications for a postdoctoral scholar to join the Hydro-Cryo-Geophysics group in the Department of Earth, Planetary, and Space Sciences at UCLA.
The selected candidate will join an NSF-funded research project led by PI Stacy Larochelle (UCLA) and Co-PI Jonathan Kingslake (Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, Columbia University) to model the coupled dynamics of groundwater, subglacial hydrology, and ice sheets (NSF awards <https://nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nsf.gov%2Fawardsearch%2Fshow-award%3FAWD_ID%3D2336328&data=05%7C02%7Cjpjobs%40whoi.edu%7Ca12447954cce48ebe84e08de55c87b77%7Cd44c5cc6d18c46cc8abd4fdf5b6e5944%7C0%7C0%7C639042516698881861%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=2%2B%2B8MEjktfC2AH2HXCsXhK2U3gPgsr4au5ogbm3VUYY%3D&reserved=0> 2336328<https://nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nsf.gov%2Fawardsearch%2Fshow-award%3FAWD_ID%3D2336328&data=05%7C02%7Cjpjobs%40whoi.edu%7Ca12447954cce48ebe84e08de55c87b77%7Cd44c5cc6d18c46cc8abd4fdf5b6e5944%7C0%7C0%7C639042516703238906%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=qL7uvyile9QT%2F%2Bonk%2F3AnqjV7ueT7xbRwAYXHjrtrj0%3D&reserved=0>, <https://nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nsf.gov%2Fawardsearch%2Fshow-award%3FAWD_ID%3D2608006&data=05%7C02%7Cjpjobs%40whoi.edu%7Ca12447954cce48ebe84e08de55c87b77%7Cd44c5cc6d18c46cc8abd4fdf5b6e5944%7C0%7C0%7C639042516703258274%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=tEG6K7vajE0ZvcI3sh4jvSjc5AAFkTlWpQEvsse2Y%2BY%3D&reserved=0> 2608006<https://nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nsf.gov%2Fawardsearch%2Fshow-award%3FAWD_ID%3D2608006&data=05%7C02%7Cjpjobs%40whoi.edu%7Ca12447954cce48ebe84e08de55c87b77%7Cd44c5cc6d18c46cc8abd4fdf5b6e5944%7C0%7C0%7C639042516703275950%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=kla5syo29JOKLWmu6xlJbrauhnhmnXiUOEhkJMG%2B1Zk%3D&reserved=0>). The postdoctoral scholar will primarily work on developing a two-way coupled numerical model of basal ice sliding, shallow subglacial hydrology, and deep groundwater flow, building on an existing poroelastic sedimentary basin model.
Required Qualifications

  *
PhD in geophysics, Earth sciences, or a closely related field
  *
Strong quantitative and computational skills

Ideal Qualifications

  *
Previous research experience in glaciology, subglacial hydrology and/or groundwater processes
  *
Experience with numerical modeling and solving coupled systems of PDEs
  *
Experience with Python, scientific code development, and high-performance computing
  *
Strong written and oral communication skills

The initial appointment is for 2 years, with the possibility of extension subject to funding availability. The start date is flexible, but the sooner the better.
