Contribute to the UN Ocean Decade through the Virtual Early Career Ocean Professional Day (V.ECOP Day) on 1 June 2021! V.ECOP Day is a 24h live event following the sun around the world and it aims to engage ECOPs from all around the world and from a variety of professional disciplines to showcase their ocean-related work, activities and contributions to the UN Ocean Decade as ECOPs are the ones who are taking the Decade forward and will become the ocean leaders of the future! It will take place right after the 1st International Conference, the official launch event, of the UN Ocean Decade. V.ECOP Day is designed as a platform so that you can present your ideas, proposals and activities for the UN Ocean Decade to a large community of stakeholders and potentially get involved in larger-scale programs and actions. It is organized by the German Marine Research Consortium & the ECOP Program with generous support from Fisheries and Oceans Canada & the EU’s Framework Program for Research and Innovation. V.ECOP Day is an officially endorsed UN Ocean Decade Activity. To contribute please submit a proposal via the Call for Livestream Moderators and Program Contributors (download here). Specifically, we are looking for: a) ECOPs who enjoy organizing and moderating a 4-hour time slot with an international team (Livestream Moderators), and, b) ECOPs who work on exciting projects and initiatives that they want to present during the V.ECOP Day (Program Contributors). We will offer a Moderators Training for the Livestream Moderators and an opportunity for Program Contributors and all participants to meet new ECOPs and make new connections. As Arctic sea ice hits annual maximum, concern grows over polar ice loss: Studies On March 12, sea ice floating atop the Arctic Ocean reached its greatest extent for the year, covering 14.750 million square kilometres (5.70 million square miles). With the exception of last winter, when sea ice reached just 15.047 million square kilometres (5.8 million square miles), sea ice extent in March 2021 was significantly above recent warm years which have put winter sea ice in jeopardy. This year ranks as the 7th lowest maximum extent since the satellite record began in 1978. Read more...
