(With Spanish version Click Here) European tuna boats dump fishing debris in Seychelles waters ‘with impunity’ n 2019, when Jeremy Raguain turned up for a cleanup campaign on Aldabra Atoll, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, he bagged a marine monstrosity like no other: a beached fish aggregating device, or FAD. It was a massive tangle of buoys, netting and fishing ropes weighing hundreds of kilograms. The fishing aid, like most FADs, was made of a floating raft and an underwater trail. More than 80% of the plastic garbage washed up on the Indian Ocean atoll, home to Seychelles’ iconic giant tortoises, is fishing-related, Raguain, a Seychellois marine conservationist, and his team estimated. Read more... An Amazonian arapaima washed up in a Florida river. It didn’t swim there t’s been called a “river monster,” and for good reason. The arapaima (Arapaima gigas) is a freshwater fish that can grow longer than a horse and weigh up to 200 kilograms (440 pounds). The species lives in the waters that snake through the Amazon lowlands. But a couple of months ago, the rotting body of an arapaima washed ashore in south Florida, thousands of kilometers from its native territory. In a statement provided to Mongabay, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) said the arapaima had washed ashore from the Caloosahatchee River, which runs into the Gulf of Mexico, in February. As halibut decline, Alaska Native fishers square off against industrial fleets Each year in mid-June, Father John, dressed in long black robes, heads to the small boat harbor on St. Paul, a tiny island of 500 souls in the middle of the Bering Sea. It’s the start of the fishing season, and the Blessing of the Fleet is a community affair, an opportunity to give best wishes to the fishermen heading out into the unforgiving northern waters in search of halibut.
