The Earth Research Institute at the University of California, Santa
Barbara (https://www.eri.ucsb.edu/), is seeking a postdoctoral scientist
to contribute to a DOE-funded project focusing on understanding the
mechanisms for tropical and extratropical Pacific decadal variability in
present and future climates.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to define their own
original sub-project aligned with the project goals, in collaboration
with investigators at UC Santa Barbara, the Georgia Institute of
Technology, the NOAA Earth System Research Laboratory, and the Los
Alamos National Laboratory. The candidate will also have primary
responsibility for generating, and the first opportunity to analyze, a
new ‘Large Ensemble’ of future climate projections with the new DOE
Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM). This ensemble will be
released to the public upon completion of the project and form a vital
new community resource. The position will be located at the Bren School
at UC Santa Barbara, but will involve collaborative visits to LANL to
facilitate work with E3SM, as well as in-person and remote interactions
with the other team leads.
Basic Qualifications: PhD in atmospheric, oceanic, or climate science or
a related field at time of application.
Additional Qualifications: 1 year experience working in Linux/Unix
environments and programming in R, Matlab, Python, NCL, and/or FORTRAN.
Preferred Qualifications: The ideal candidate will also have experience
working with output from and conducting simulations with ocean and/or
climate models. Experience in the area of coupled climate dynamics,
especially with regards to variability on interannual to decadal
timescales, is highly desirable.
The initial term of the appointment will be 12 months, with the
possibility of subsequent extension based on performance and
availability of funding. For primary consideration apply by January 15,
2019. Position is open until filled. Preferred start date would be May
2019. To apply, please upload a cover letter, statement of research,
including a description of current research interests, experience with
climate/Earth system modeling, and near-term research goals. Please also
provide a current CV and contact information for 3 references to:
https://recruit.ap.ucsb.edu/apply/JPF01424. Email Samantha Stevenson
(stevenson at bren.ucsb.edu <mailto:stevenson at bren.ucsb.edu>) with any
questions related to the position.
The University is especially interested in candidates who can contribute
to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through
research, teaching and service as appropriate to the position.
The University of California is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action
Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for
employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual
orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability status,
protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.

*Postdoctoral Fellow position in tropical climate research (position
remains open until filled)*
We are planning to fill a postdoctoral position in the newly established
research team “/Tropical climate dynamics: past, present, future/” led
by Dr. Malte Stuecker (<https://www.iccp.ibs.re.kr/people/malte-stuecker>)
at the IBS Center for Climate Physics (ICCP), Pusan National University
(<http://iccp.ibs.re.kr <http://iccp.ibs.re.kr/>>), South Korea.
The IBS Center for Climate Physics (ICCP), directed by Dr. Axel
Timmermann, is dedicated to advancing the understanding of natural
climate variability, man-made climate change and their impacts on the
hydrological cycle, regional processes, ice-sheets, and sea level. The
ICCP is generously funded through the Institute for Basic Science (IBS)
(<http://ibs.re.kr <http://ibs.re.kr/>>).
Applicants for this position should have a PhD in physical oceanography,
atmospheric science, climate dynamics, or a related field. Postdoctoral
Fellows are expected to have strong computational skills, a good
publication record, a high level of independence and creativity, and an
interest in working in an international and interdisciplinary research
environment. Our tropical climate research team studies large-scale
climate dynamics and modes of climate variability (e.g., ENSO and
decadal variability). For instance, we are interested in the question of
which temperature and precipitation patterns will emerge in response to
anthropogenic forcing and how climate feedbacks will respond. This is
contrasted to the dynamical response of the climate system to different
forcings in past climates. Furthermore, we plan to investigate the
greater role of tropical climate in the Earth system (such as its
linkages with high latitude climate and the marine carbon cycle). To
address these questions, we will utilize both high resolution coupled
climate model simulations and large ensemble experiments that are
currently conducted on our new 1 Pflop supercomputer.
Postdoctoral fellows will receive a competitive salary (50 million
KRW/year, which is approx. 45,000 USD/year), support for conference
travel, support for relocation, access to our new supercomputer, as well
as benefits (health and social insurance contributions) and incentives
(up to an additional 30% of the annual salary).
Employer: IBS Center for Climate Physics
Location: Pusan National University, Busan, South Korea
Education Level: PhD
Job type: Postdoctoral Fellow
Term: Full Time, 1 year initially, with strong possibility for renewal
Start date of position: as soon as possible
ICCP is located in Busan, the second largest city in South Korea and the
ninth largest port city in the world. Surrounded by ocean and mountains,
the city has a dramatic natural background, and the multitude of
neighborhoods in Busan each have a distinct character. From designer
cafes and casual bars to temples at the end of hiking trails, and good
food at every place imaginable, Busan has something for everyone. Also,
Busan is an international metropolis characterized by remarkably low
living costs.
Please submit a cover letter, a short statement of your research
interests, curriculum vitae, the name of 2 references, and up to three
publications to Ms. U-Jeong Seo (<u_jeongs at pusan.ac.kr
<mailto:u_jeongs at pusan.ac.kr>>). If you have any further questions
regarding this position, please contact Malte Stuecker
(<stuecker at pusan.ac.kr <mailto:stuecker at pusan.ac.kr>>) or Axel
Timmermann (<timmermann at pusan.ac.kr <mailto:timmermann at pusan.ac.kr>> ).
The position remains open until filled.
