Instructor, Lecturer or Senior Lecturer

Geology and Geological Engineering

The Department of Geology and Geological Engineering at the South Dakota
School of Mines & Technology invites applications for a full-time,
9-month term Instructor, Lecturer or Senior Lecturer to teach courses in
geospatial technology, geographic information systems (GIS), remote
sensing, land surveying, and/or other courses as needed. The successful
candidate will coordinate the geospatial minor and certificate programs
offered by the department; administer the statewide GIS software
consortium, manage campus GIS licensing; and provide technical support
to staff and students. A Master's degree in geology, geography or
related science/engineering field is required; a PhD is preferred.
Teaching and/or professional experience is desired. Opportunities for
summer instruction through the Black Hills Natural Sciences Field
Station also may be available.

The university is at the center of diverse geological terrain and is
located in Rapid City, SD. The Black Hills uplift lies within the
northern Rocky Mountains, contains a historical gold mining region, and
is flanked by the fossil rich Badlands and the energy resource rich
Williston and Powder River basins. Geology and Geological Engineering
research initiatives span the Black Hills region, as well as domestic
and international targets. Our Black Hills Natural Sciences Field
Station offers a variety of geology, geological engineering,
volcanology, paleontology, and environmental field camps in locations
worldwide. The affiliated Museum of Geology includes the Paleontology
Research Laboratory housing collections of over 500,000 mineral and
fossil specimens. A variety of analytical and equipment facilities exist
within the department and across campus, including two teaching labs
with access to a full suite of geospatial software products. Further,
the university tablet program provides PC laptop computers, including
GIS software, for all undergraduates.

Established in 1885, the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology is a
science and engineering research university located in Rapid City, South
Dakota. South Dakota Mines is a public university offering bachelor's,
master's, and doctoral degrees in engineering and science. Known for our
academic rigor, we maintain a 15:1 student-to-faculty ratio. Our
students benefit from immersive learning experiences including
undergraduate research, co-ops/internships, and numerous nationally
competitive engineering teams. Our graduates have a 98% placement rate
and an average starting salary of over $63,000. Our Research Programs
are concentrated in four areas: energy and environment; materials and
manufacturing; STEM education; and underground science.

South Dakota Mines is a growing university that enrolls over 2,800
students from 41 states and 28 countries. Rapid City is the state's
second largest city (with an urban population of 73,569 and metropolitan
population of 197,628) and is nestled at the foot of the beautiful Black
Hills. Mount Rushmore, the Badlands National Park and Crazy Horse
Memorial are all within an hour of the University. Rapid City enjoys a
relatively mild climate and offers year-round recreational
opportunities, including, hiking, bicycling, skiing, snowboarding,
fishing, and hunting, to name a few. For more information about South
Dakota Mines and Rapid City, visit: www.sdsmt.edu <http://www.sdsmt.edu>
