Hello,
I would like to draw your attention to a 3-yr postdoctoral position available at the University of St Andrews (Scotland) on radiocarbon reservoir age reconstruction in the North Atlantic. Summary and further particulars can be found at the following website:
http://www.jobs.ac.uk/job/AJP994/research-fellow/
Start: 1 November 2014 or as soon as possible thereafter, Fixed term for 3 years
The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at St Andrews is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher for 3 years, in the area of marine radiocarbon, isotope geochemistry and paleoceanography. The position is available from Nov 1, 2014, or as soon as possible thereafter. The project is a large collaboration between five investigators at the University of St Andrews and Queen’s University Belfast, and project partners at 12 other research organizations.
Marine radiocarbon reconstructions are fundamental for understanding past climate change and variations in overturning circulation for two reasons. Firstly, radiocarbon is a sensitive and relatively direct proxy for ventilation rate. Secondly, radiocarbon is the key chronological tool for determining the timing of climate signals in marine records. However the use of radiocarbon both as a tracer and chronometer is currently limited by poor knowledge of how the radiocarbon content of surface ocean (the radiocarbon reservoir age) varied with time. This project aims to create a regional surface radiocarbon record for the North Atlantic over the past 50 thousand years, from a combination of high-resolution radiocarbon measurements, tephrochronology, Bayesian modelling of sediment age-depth relationships, and 230-thorium (230Th) assisted estimates of sedimentation rate changes.
The postdoc will be responsible for coordinating and preparing sediment core samples, sample preparation for radiocarbon measurement, and 230Thorium measurements on sediment. The postdoc will also be responsible for presenting the work at international conferences and preparing manuscripts for submission to leading journals.
