Innovim is searching a full time Scientist to supporting tasks at the Climate Prediction Center/NCEP/NWS. The tasks includes: 1) Assist in activities related to formulating a hybrid dynamical-statistical prediction system based on the North-American Multi-Model Ensemble (NMME) system to be incorporated into the NOAA Hurricane Season Outlook (HSO). The candidate will work with CPC staff in generating a hybrid dynamical-statistical prediction system for hurricane season prediction utilizing the NMME prediction suite and also participate in making the special high resolution CFS prediction runs and the accompanying tropical storm analysis done in timely manner for issuing the HSO in May and August. The candidate will also work with various NCEP operational prediction suite and perform diagnostic evaluations of the NCEP GFS and CFS real time prediction for CPC's extended range forecasts. 2) Assist in developing and implementing a Week 3-4 outlook for temperature and precipitation over the United States. The individual will work with CPC staff to transition a statistical model into an operational forecast environment and also explore statistical methods to combine dynamical model forecasts, such as those from NMME and from the Climate Forecast System (CFS), with empirical tools. Also, the candidate will explore the feasibility of providing forecasts on extremes for Week 3-4.
The successful candidate will have a master's or doctoral degree in atmospheric sciences or related physical sciences and have experience in handling large amount of data from GCMs and knowledge of statistics. Also required are good understanding of tropical storm dynamics, atmospheric and ocean prediction model components and their workings in the UNIX/Linux environments. Basic knowledge of the Madden-Julian Oscillation and the El Nino-Southern Oscillation is helpful, but not required. The candidate is expected to be proficient in the Fortran and Matlab (or Octave) programing languages, UNIX scripting language, and scientific and graphics softwares (e.g. GrADs and METLAB).
The position is located at the National Center for Weather and Climate Prediction, 5830 University Research Court, College Park, MD. The successful candidate is expected to work very closely with atmospheric and hydrologic scientists at CPC. Prospected candidates should apply at the Careers at Innovim.com. Please refer to Requisition Number 14-0055. The candidate must be an US Citizen, or Permanent Resident holding a working status, and be able to pass a NACI clearance.
