Sharks bite roughly 70 people each year worldwide, with perhaps 6-10 
fatalities, according to data compiled in the International Shark Attack 
File (ISAF). Although shark bites get a lot of attention, this is far 
less than the number of people injured each year by elephants, bees, 
crocodiles, lightning or many other natural dangers.

Description
The Ocean Health Index is a scientific framework for assessing ocean 
health across a range of values and benefits people derive from the 
ocean. It was developed to aid policy and management decision-making, 
communicate with the public and stakeholder groups, and inform business.
The Director is responsible for the general management of the project, 
including international adoption of the Index, communications strategy, 
donor relations, and partnerships with scientific institutions. 
Responsibilities include development of strategy for global and regional 
assessments; input to translating scientific output from our partners at 
the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis at UC Santa 
Barbara into language and tools that are useful to decision-makers; 
management of a small staff and the program budget; oversight of 
fundraising and donor relations; oversight of a comprehensive website on 
the project; and communications plans and activities, including story 
development and social media. The Director participates with a coalition 
of partners responsible for the Index and its application.
