*Dear Julia,*

Happy Friday to you!

We hope you are enjoying the new DCMC weekly newsletter.

Please be sure to check out our newest section: "*You've got to read
this!*" As the first in a hopefully regular series, DCMC is going to be
reaching out to - and /*very*/ happily taking voluntary submissions from
- its membership with a request to tell us all about a few recent
reports, papers, websites and any other form of communication around a
given topic. This week's topic is from Linwood Pendleton on the
management of marine ecosystem services.

As always, the community is about you, so please keep sharing all
submissions and suggestions as we work to optimize our outreach.

***Please note, we intend to do a once-weekly Friday newsletter, so
please send your submissions no later than Thursday in a given week!***

*Date and Time*: October 8, 2014 at 2 PM ET
*Location*: Free webinar

Description*: Land-based hydraulic fracturing has been the subject of
extensive discussion and debate in recent years. But offshore hydraulic
fracturing has received relatively little attention, despite having been
used in practice for many years to stimulate wells where production has
declined and where there are offshore shale plays.
Emerging awareness of offshore hydraulic fracturing has spurred
questions about the nature of the practice, how it has been employed,
and the framework for managing it. This webinar convenes representatives
from various sectors to address these and other questions surrounding
the science, law, and policy of offshore hydraulic fracturing. The goal
of the webinar is to provide perspective on the growing, yet rarely
discussed, practice of using hydraulic fracturing in the ocean setting.

*Living in the Anthropcoene: Prospects for Climate, Economics, Health,
and Security*

Baird Auditorium
National Museum of Natural History
10th Street & Constitution Avenue, N.W.
Thursday, October 9, 2014
Coffee hour 8:00 - 9:00 a.m.
Symposium 9:15 a.m. - 6:30 p.m.
Reception to follow
*Description*: Humans are transforming the climate and environments of
the Earth at an accelerating rate through agriculture, urbanization,
transportation, the use of fossil fuels, and many other activities. Our
global imprint, and the certainty that more than seven billion people
will profoundly change the environment and biota of the planet for many
generations to come, have led many scientists to recognize a new period
of geological time called the Anthropocene, or Age of Humans. Restoring
Anthropocene environments to pre-industrial conditions may be
impossible, but the future need not be apocalyptic if we act soon. To
make a livable Anthropocene, we must use our scientific knowledge to
forecast environmental change and develop more resilient societies and
cultural institutions that can adapt to the changes we can no longer
avoid. This symposium features the views of leaders in the fields of
climate, health, economics, and security who will consider the problems
we face and offer possible solutions. Following each talk, a panel of
Smithsonian scholars and thinkers will discuss the issues raised by the
presentation.
*
For more information*: A full event program including schedule and bio
sketches for speakers and panelists can be downloaded from our website:
http://www.si.edu/consortia.
The event is free and open to the public. Please feel free to distribute
this announcement to interested parties. All are welcome, but space is
limited. Please RSVP to Consortia at si.edu to receive a ticket.

Description*: How will we feed 9 billion people by 2050, in the face of
environmental challenges? Governments, the private sector, civil society
and other stakeholders need to come together to create innovative
solutions and scale up actions that will feed the world, in a way that
is resource-efficient and resilient to climate change. Hear from a
high-level expert panel on how a move toward climate-smart agriculture,
more integrated landscapes and seascapes, and more sustainable supply
chains can help ensure food for the future.*

showing WRI's location and instructions for how to get to our offices
for more information; also note that you will be required to present a
photo ID and sign in at the main lobby upon arrival*.*
*Description*: You are invited to attend a presentation by Dr. Libby
Jewett, Director of NOAA's Ocean Acidification (OA) Program and chair of
the federal working group on OA. Janet Ranganathan, WRI's VP for Science
& Publications, and Randall Snodgrass, WRI's Director of U.S. Government
Cooperation, will host the event.
>From her perspective as the primary lead on ocean acidification response
in the US, Dr. Jewett will present on the threats posed by ocean
acidification and on how this critical issue is being addressed through
observations, research, and federal and international actions including
adaptive strategies.
Ocean acidification is a global condition with local affects.
Acidification refers to the ongoing decrease in the pH of the Earth's
oceans caused by absorption of carbon dioxide (CO2). Marine life is
susceptible to adverse impacts of acidification including reduced shell
and skeleton formation, loss of habitat (reefs), decreased availability
of prey and smaller fisheries, and other effects on growth, behavior,
and health. These factors have long-term impacts on ocean health and
commercial fisheries that could threaten food security, particularly in
coastal communities in developing nations.
We hope you will join us for this important conversation. Note that
space is limited and an RSVP is required to attend this event. Please
RSVP to dsolomonson at wri.orgif you plan to attend.
