*Oceanographic Data Specialist, Joint Institute for Marine and
Atmospheric Research *
* *Organization*: Joint Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research
(JIMAR), University of Hawaii at Manoa
* *Location*: Honolulu, HI
* *Description*:
Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCPs) are used on research
ships to measure ocean currents. During a cruise, the current
observations may be used to locate features, or to aid in deploying
over-the-side equipment; afterwards, they play a role in a wide
range of applications, from climatological descriptions of ocean
circulation to detailed process studies of current features (e.g.,
fronts, eddies) and phenomena (e.g., internal waves). Our group at
the University of Hawaii has been involved with shipboard ADCPs for
over 30 years. As developers of a widely-used open source,
multi-platform shipboard ADCP processing system, (CODAS:
http://currents.soest.hawaii.edu/docs/adcp_doc/index.html) we help
scientists and technicians turn their raw ADCP and ancillary
measurements into a science-worthy data product. Our acquisition
system, UHDAS
(http://currents.soest.hawaii.edu/docs/adcp_doc/UHDAS_atsea/index.html),
is installed on most of the U.S. academic research vessels. It is
designed to provide rapid access to the measurements at sea, and to
facilitate subsequent processing and use of the data.
JIMAR has recently acquired funding to install and support UHDAS on
much of the NOAA research fleet, so we are looking for an
enthusiastic, multi-talented individual to join our group. We need
someone who can learn to install, troubleshoot, and maintain Linux
systems with our extensive Python code base; is comfortable training
marine technicians to operate UHDAS, and working with scientists to
adapt UHDAS and CODAS to their needs; and is interested in traveling
to ships in port and on short cruises for installation, maintenance,
and training. The job will call on a wide range of skills:
communication and working with a variety of people; technical
proficiency with instrumentation, computers, and programming; and
scientific sense in evaluating observations, from the raw data
streams through the final product.
