Marine Ecology Intern, WWF

Washington, DC

World Wildlife Fund US (WWF) is seeking an intern with a background in
marine science to work with an interdisciplinary team to provide support
for ongoing and future work on MPAs in Indonesia. There are two main
projects that the intern will be involved with:

(1) Evaluating the ecological impacts of existing MPAs

Marine protected areas (MPAs) are an integral component of local,
national, and international strategies for biodiversity conservation,
but their impacts are widely debated. To inform this debate and catalyze
adaptive management, WWF and its partners have implemented an
interdisciplinary approach to MPA monitoring and impact evaluation in
Indonesia. Our monitoring efforts build upon established MPA monitoring
protocols and allow us to explore the contribution of MPAs to
biodiversity and habitat conservation as well as to ecosystem services,
fisheries, and other human uses of marine environments.

(2) Providing science support to design MPAs for sustainable fisheries

Frequently a goal of MPAs is to support fisheries production as well as
protecting marine biodiversity. WWF intends to support the design of
new MPAs and evaluation of existing MPAs to address the synergies and
tradeoffs between conservation and fisheries management in Indonesia.
To carry this out successfully requires bringing together the best
available data on the ecological, biophysical, and social conditions in
the region.

Major Duties & Responsibilities: In collaboration with the MPA team, the
intern will:

1. Assist in synthesis, quality control and management of existing
ecological monitoring data to establish baseline conditions and evaluate
short term ecological impacts of MPAs in Indonesia.

2. Assist in developing a scientific approach/concept to design MPAs for
fisheries in Indonesia.

3. Perform other duties including literature reviews for scientific
articles; communication of results for different audiences (local
stakeholders, scientific, etc.).

Requirements

1. Masters (or equivalent) in ecological, interdisciplinary, or marine
science. Experience in conservation or related field preferred.

2. Strong data management and statistical skills, with demonstrated
experience handling large datasets. Experience with R, Microsoft
Access, and GIS strongly preferred.

3. Ability to work both independently and in a team.

4. Excellent writing skills

5. Must be willing to travel to Indonesia (if necessary). International
experience strongly preferred.

To apply: Preference will be given to applications received by June 13,
2014. Please submit a cover letter and CV with the subject line “Marine
Ecology Intern Position” to Gabby Ahmadia at Gabby.Ahmadia at wwfus.org
<mailto:Gabby.Ahmadia at wwfus.org>

This is a paid internship. Contract duration will be for four months
with possibility for extension. This position is based in the WWF
Marine Program in Washington, DC. and requires eligibility to work or
study in the United States.

PhD / Post Doc Opportunity, Namibian Dolphin Project

Walvis Bay, Namibia

“Cetacean community monitoring and health”

The Namibian Dolphin Project is a non-profit, research and conservation
organization run by a small group of independent scientists in
association with the University of Pretoria’s Mammal Research Institute
and the Namibia Nature Foundation. Our mission is to research Namibia’s
cetaceans to generate data on these populations that can be used for
their conservation through sustainable management. See
www.namibiandolphinproject.com <http://www.namibiandolphinproject.com/>
for project background

We are currently looking to expand our team and forge collaborations
with researchers working on cetacean monitoring and health assessment.
Consequently, we are seeking an experienced PhD student or recent post
doctoral graduate (or both) to join our team in Walvis Bay, Namibia.
This person would be expected to take a proactive approach in developing
and leading research efforts within the framework of our cetacean
community health and monitoring programme during a large coastal
construction project taking place within Walvis Bay.

Our core research focuses on a small and potentially threatened
population of common bottlenose dolphins (/Tursiops truncatus/) with
additional research being done on Heaviside’s dolphin (/Cephalorhynchus
heavisidii/), dusky dolphins (/Lagenorhynchus obscurus/) and humpback
whales (/Megaptera novaeangliae/). New research will build on
photographic, behavioural, acoustic, stranding and tissue datasets
collected since 2008, thus scope to develop research questions is wide.

Logistical and fieldwork support will be provided but limited funds are
available at the moment and the successful candidate will be expected to
assist in generating funds through grant applications, sponsorships
(etc) to finance further fieldwork and living costs.

Although training will be provided, the ideal candidate will have a
background in the relevant field skills: photo-identification, biopsy
sampling, small boat research, stranding attendance and necropsy and be
able to work independently leading field research efforts.

The candidate must be reliable, independent and self motivated and have
a drivers licence for manual cars and be an experienced boat skipper.
This position is open to all nationalities, but those from SADC regions
will be preferred.

The successful candidate will be expected to relocate to Walvis Bay,
Namibia, for a minimum of 2.5 years during this project with some time
spent in Cape Town, South Africa.

Start Date: from July 2014 onwards.

For further information about this opportunity, please contact Dr Simon
Elwen or Dr Tess Gridley on
