10. Post-doc position, University of Queensland
Brisbane, Australia

Post-doctoral scientist to develop reef carbonate budgets for the Great
Barrier Reef

Most ecological functions of coral reefs are founded on their ability to
maintain the production of a reef framework (i.e., that processes of
reef bioconstruction exceed those of erosion). It is important to know
how local management actions, as well as global action to mitigate
greenhouse gas emissions, can influence the ability of reefs to function
in future. To do this, we need to create models of the ecosystem that
integrate a wealth of experimental and observational research. A
position is available to work on this challenge for reefs in the
Pacific, including the GBR and Palau. The position is initially
advertised for 1 year but an extension may become feasible..

The position is based at The University of Queensland, in Brisbane,
Australia. The applicant would join a diverse research group and take a
lead in developing new ecological models (see
www.marinespatialecologylab.org
<http://www.marinespatialecologylab.org/> There is also substantial
opportunity to contribute to on-going collaborations with researchers at
AIMS, Griffith University, JCU, and the University of Exeter (UK).

The successful applicant will have a PhD in a relevant topic. Topics
could include ecosystem modelling, empirical research on impacts of
ocean acidification on on coral reefs, biogeochemistry of coral reefs,
carbonate budgets. Applicants are welcome to apply who have no modelling
experience providing they're willing to learn (it isn't that difficult!).

Application deadline: 25th January 2014 (no internal candidate in mind).
Start date: 1st April 2014, salary ca $70,000 + benefits

16. Project Manager – Marine Ecologist (Benthic, oceanography,
fisheries, data), South Atlantic Environmental Research Institute

Falkland Islands

This position will co-ordinate priority gap work identified by the
Falkland Islands Offshore Hydrocarbons Environmental Forum (FIOHEF) with
regard to benthic ecology, oceanography, and fisheries. The primary
objective of this position is data collation and curation so that they
can be used more efficiently in future EIAs.

Organisations operating in the Falkland Islands have collected large
amounts of information over the last twenty years and this includes
oceanographic, metocean, seismic, benthic fauna, benthic environmental,
multi-beam and RoV footage etc. Much of these data are held at different
locations and the fate/location of some remains unknown. In order for
these data to be used a strategy for data storage, quality control and
curation is essential.

The position will be based in the South Atlantic Environmental Research
Institute’s (SAERI) head office in Stanley. The Marine Ecologist (Higher
Predators) Project Officer will report to the Director and the project’s
performance will be monitored by a Project Oversight Committee
comprising representatives from Falkland Islands Government, Falkland
Islands Petroleum Licensees Association, and Offshore Hydrocarbons
Environmental Forum.

17. Project Manager – Marine Ecologist (Higher Predators), South
Atlantic Environmental Research Institute

Falkland Islands

This position will co-ordinate priority gap work identified by the
Falkland Islands Offshore Hydrocarbons Environmental Forum (FIOHEF) with
regard to higher marine predators and the exploration and development of
hydrocarbons in the Falkland Islands.

Seabirds and marine mammals, particularly seabirds, are amongst the most
susceptible group in relation to potential oil spill contamination, and
oil spill events have frequently been recorded as having
population-level impacts. There are a range of species/populations that
are vulnerable to oil contamination in the Falkland Islands; penguins
are particularly susceptible given their diving behaviour, and the
Falklands supports large numbers of albatross (and significant
proportions of global populations for a number of species).

The position will be based in the South Atlantic Environmental Research
Institute’s (SAERI) head office in Stanley. The Marine Ecologist (Higher
Predators) Project Officer will report to the Director and the project’s
performance will be monitored by a Project Oversight Committee
