16. MPA ecological data analyst intern, WWF

Washington, DC

Indonesia is at the epicenter of marine biodiversity, providing habitat
for 76 percent of known coral species and more than 3,000 fish species,
these marine resources are also critical for both livelihoods and food
security, supporting more than 120 million people living in coastal
areas. Unfortunately, this rich biodiversity is under threat from
climate change, over-fishing, pollution, and other pressures related to
unsustainable development.

There has been substantial investment in marine conservation in the
Birds Head Seascape (BHS) and more recently, there has been an emphasis
in the Sunda Banda Seascape. (SBS) To understand how these conservation
interventions are impacting the ecosystem, ecological monitoring has
been conducted in and out of the MPAs in the BHS and SBS through a
consortium of NGOs, universities, and government institutions.

WWF-US is seeking an intern to synthesize ecological data in the Birds
Head Seascape and the Sunda Banda Seascape.

Internship activities include:

? summarize and analyze existing ecological and biophysical data in the
Birds Head Seascape and the Sunda Banda Seascape

? assist with development and maintenance of ecological databases

? use existing data to help compile a report on the ecological status of
the MPAs in the Birds Head Seascape and Sunda Banda Seascape.

Requirements: The successful applicant will have a background in
ecology/conservation/statistics. Position requires strong analytical
skills, as well as demonstrated expertise in handling large datasets in
Microsoft Excel. Basic statistical skills required; understanding of
multivariate statistics preferred. The successful applicant will be able
to work independently, as well as part of an interdisciplinary team.
This position requires eligibility to work or study in the United
States. This position is based in Washington, D.C.

in school and be able to obtain academic course credit from their
university. Due date for CV and cover letter: March 1, 2014

17. MPA meta-analysis intern, WWF

Washington, DC

As awareness of the importance of marine ecosystem services grows, so
too does the recognition that better governance of social-ecological
systems (SES) is critical to sustainability. There is however, a lack of
understanding of the impact of current governance regimes on marine
social-ecological systems.

Drawing upon the seminal work of Elinor Ostrom, the World Wildlife Fund
(WWF) and The National Socio-Environmental Synthesis Center (SESYNC) are
in the process of collating and analyzing interdisciplinary monitoring
data from hundreds of marine protected areas (MPAs) in order to identify
and document the social and ecological impacts of protected areas around
the world.

WWF-US is seeking an intern to synthesize management, governance and
ecological data collected from various global MPA datasets. Internship
activities include:

? collating management, governance and ecological data from multiple
data sources;

? desktop research for local, national and regional contextual data on
MPAs and countries where MPAs are located;

? assists with the management and structure of the final database.

Requirements: The successful applicant should be experienced in working
with medium/large datasets and be proficient in the use of database
software such as Excel, Access and/or experience in SQL language. Basic
statistical skills required; understanding of multivariate statistics
preferred. A background in ecology/conservation would also be
beneficial. The successful applicant will be able to work independently,
as well as part of an interdisciplinary team. This position requires
eligibility to work or study in the United States. This position is

Washington, DC

Coastal East Africa encompasses a beautiful tapestry of land and
sea—from mountains and grasslands to mangroves and fringing coral reefs.
