Subject: for your doctoral students
Dear area directors of grad studies,
You may have heard about an event coming up on Oct. 3 in Marlboro, Mass., aimed at helping doctoral students and adjunct faculty become better prepared for teaching at teaching-intensive institutions such as regional comprehensives, community colleges, and liberal arts colleges.
Not all doctoral students want to pursue a career that’s focused primarily on teaching rather than research, but faculty positions at 4-4 institutions like mine and at community colleges are extremely rewarding. A Cross-Sector Consortium, made up of representatives from dozens of area colleges and universities, has designed a day-long colloquium/symposium/event to introduce potential job-seekers to what they should know before applying for jobs at our institutions. And it’s free to attendees.
We’ll have workshops on many relevant topics (see attached flyer) and will offer free job counseling to those who bring a CV and a sample cover letter and want to know how to make themselves more attractive candidates for jobs at teaching-intensive institutions.
Please share the attached flyer with your grad students and adjuncts and do anything you can to help them to attend this event. And please ask them to RSVP before Sept. 3 so I know how much food to order.
The schools organizing the event include Bridgewater State University, Brown University, Holyoke Community College, UMass Amherst, Cape Cod Community College, Salem State University, Northeastern University, Greenfield Community College, Boston College, UMass Boston, Framingham State University, Eastern Connecticut State University, Boston University, Massasoit Community College, Wheaton College, Fitchburg State University, and more.
Thanks for any help you can give.
