The North America Regional Director will work with the President, other
regional directors, Chief Scientist, Seafood Choices Program team, and
communications, science, and operations support staff to manage its

programmatic focus of the director is to manage SeaWeb’s sustainable

Marine Technical Specialist, Rare Conservation
Koror, Palau
Reporting to the Micronesia program director and located in Koror,
Palau, the marine technical specialist will provide technical support to
local conservation leaders (“campaign managers”) enrolled in Rare’s
Program for Island Resilience in Micronesia. This two year program
consists of 17 weeks of master’s degree level academic training plus 84
weeks in the field implementing social marketing-based Pride Campaigns
in their communities. The program launched in July 2012.
Rare’s Micronesia cohort includes 11 campaigns, 4 of which focus on
controlling erosion in key watersheds and 7 of which focus on improving
MPA effectiveness. The ideal candidate for marine technical specialist
will have experience working on both MPA enforcement as well as erosion
control measures. Candidates with one area of specialty will also be
considered.
This position will focus on each campaign’s “barrier removal” (BR)
strategies. At Rare we use social marketing principles to change the
behavior of individuals to adopt specific positive environmental
behaviors which ultimately result in improved conservation. Barrier
removal strategies use socioeconomic research to identify what are the
barriers to adopting positive behaviors and then work to remove those
impediments. For example, if research shows that community members are
not aware of MPA boundaries, a barrier removal strategy could include
demarcation of the MPA with buoys and increased signage.
For Micronesia, barrier removal focuses on improving MPA enforcement and
governance through demarcation, building guard houses, completing and/or
updating of MPA management plans, forming MPA management committees, and
other activities as appropriate per site. For the terrestrial sites, the
focus is on setting up erosion control demonstration sites, training
landowners on erosion control best practices, and revegetating barren
areas. Strategies are customized to each site.
The marine technical specialist will provide technical assistance to
each of the campaign managers to support the barrier removal activities
in their campaigns. This includes developing barrier removal operation
plans at each site and implementing these plans over the next 18 months.
This position is contingent upon specific project funding. We are eager
to begin sharing this post and initiate conversations with interested
and qualified candidates. Initial interviews will be confirmed once
funding has been secured in early 2013. Ideal start date is
mid-February, 2013.

marine ecosystems. The Director will design, develop, implement, and
manage all aspects of the TMO program activities at national and
international levels. The Director of the TMO will be based at the
National Museum of Natural History in Washington DC. The incumbent will
report to one of the biologically-based Smithsonian science units

Director, Protecting the Deep Sea Campaign, Pew Environment Group
London, UK
This project is part of the Environment Group’s International Ocean
Conservation Program. Building on Pew’s strength in the United States
and Europe, this project continues our efforts to protect vulnerable
deep sea life from destructive fishing practices. It will concentrate
on reducing deep sea bottom fisheries in the Northeast Atlantic--the
area of the world where most high-seas bottom trawling takes place.
Specifically, we will advocate that the European Union (EU), by far the
largest high-seas bottom trawl fishing fleet in this region, takes the
necessary measures to implement its international obligations contained
in United Nations resolutions, reduces the footprint of its vessels, and
reduces the total allowable catches (all species caught) and quotas for
specific species that it sets for deep sea fisheries. We will do this
through the regulatory process in the EU, concentrating on the Deep Sea
Access Regime proposal that was released by the European Commission in
July of 2012.
Our efforts will also focus on the two RFMOs with jurisdiction in the
North Atlantic, the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization (NAFO) and
the Northeast Atlantic Fisheries Commission (NEAFC).

Coral Reef Studies have common interests in improving sustainability and
governance systems among Pacific small-scale fisheries. The Australian
Research Council (ARC) Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies
encompasses >240 researchers and graduate students, with ongoing
research projects in 30 countries. WorldFish is an international

‘reduce poverty and hunger through improving fisheries and aquaculture’.
WorldFish has a global staff of about 330, permanent offices in 7
countries and ongoing projects in 25 countries.
This co-funded postdoctoral position provides the opportunity for an
exceptional candidate to pursue research on governance and
sustainability of Pacific Island coastal fisheries. The appointee will
join a WorldFish team working with authorities and stakeholders in
Solomon Islands, Kiribati and Vanuatu to develop the structures,
processes and capacity to implement and sustain national programs of

and food security) from existing CBRM initiatives in the Pacific, and
synthesis of lessons-learned. The joint appointment with the Australian
Research Council Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies will
provide the candidate with the freedom to further develop a research

Research Positions, Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences
Stockholm, Sweden
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences is pleased to announce two
positions as Early Career Academy Researcher, one for a scholar with a
documented background in economics and one for a scholar with a
documented background in research on social-ecological interactions.
The positions will be part of the Family Erling Persson’s Academy
Program on The Ecological Economics of Global Change, lead by Prof. Carl
Folke.
Human wellbeing and the Earth system on which it depends are in
transition. In a globalised world the economy, society, technology and
the environment interact in novel and even unexpected ways. A key
challenge is to foster development that is favourable and sustainable
for current and future generations, taking into account and respecting
the capacity of the biosphere to support such development.
Research will address the complex, multi-scale dynamics of
social–ecological systems, economic development and critical ecosystem
services in the new global context.
The dynamics include nonlinear thresholds that can lead to large,
persistent changes but also transformations of human actions toward
stewardship of social–ecological systems for global sustainability. Part
of the program will focus on marine issues in this context.
The Ecological Economics of Global Change program aims to address such
challenges and is searching for key collaborators to achieve this. The
positions are two plus three years, with potential for continuation. We
envision a early career researchers at the level of post-doc or similar.
