Program Associate, The Ocean Foundation
Washington DC
The Ocean Foundation (TOF) is a 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit international
community foundation with a mission to support, strengthen, and promote
those organizations dedicated to reversing the trend of destruction of
ocean environments around the world. TOF works with donors who care
about the coasts and oceans to attract new financial resources to
support marine conservation in order to promote healthy ocean ecosystems
and benefit the human communities who depend on them.
One line of business is our Fiscal Sponsorship Fund program, comprised
of two types of sponsorship activities. Directly sponsored projects
benefit from the non-profit organizational infrastructure of TOF
allowing the projects’ staff to focus on program work and not
administration. TOF staff provide financial, administrative, human
resources and project counseling support so that project leaders can
focus on program planning, fundraising, and outreach. Through our
organizational sponsorship, or ‘Friends of’ sponsorship activity,
international non-profits are able to access U.S. donors so as to
benefit from the charitable deduction available by giving to a 501(c)(3)
entity.
The Program Associate is responsible for the operation and
administration of the TOF Fiscal Sponsorship Program. This position
will provide support to projects in general operations and financial
management; will process new projects and contracts, and will be the
main point of contact for all sponsored program managers. The position
will work directly for the Program Officer.
TOF is seeking an experienced program professional with a graduate
degree and two to three years of work experience. Individuals with a
bachelors degree and three to five years of experience will also be
considered. Work experience should include planning and organizing,
problem solving and working independently and as a productive team
member, as well as demonstrate a clear ability to meet deadlines and
complete tasks with a high degree of accuracy and dependability.
Required skills include effective written and oral communications,
understanding and ability to work with colleagues across many diverse
cultures and backgrounds, detail-oriented and ability to multi-task.
Strong computer skills are necessary, and experience with web-based
databases including Salesforce and Clicktime is preferred. A solid
interest in environmental and sustainable development issues, especially
those related to marine and coastal conservation, is a plus. Spanish
language skills (written and oral) are also a plus. The Ocean Foundation
is a Mac environment.
If interested, please submit cover letter and resume to
info at oceanfdn.org <mailto:info at oceanfdn.org>, and include “Project
Associate” in the subject line. Deadline for submissions is January 18th.

Project Coordinator, Cuba Marine Research and Conservation Program, The
Ocean Foundation
The Ocean Foundation (TOF) is a 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit international
community foundation with a mission to support, strengthen, and promote
those organizations dedicated to reversing the trend of destruction of
ocean environments around the world. TOF works with donors who care
about the coasts and oceans to attract new financial resources to
support marine conservation in order to promote healthy ocean ecosystems
and benefit the human communities who depend on them. The Ocean
Foundation’s Cuba Marine Research and Conservation Program (CMRC) is
currently seeking a part time contractor as the Project Coordinator.
CMRC represents a decade-long effort establishing working relationships
between US and Cuban scientists and policy makers and implementing
ground-breaking research activities. In addition the program has
developed an unprecedented tri-national partnership dedicated to
elevating collaboration in marine science and conservation between Cuba,
Mexico and the United States. The program is in a unique position
addressing compelling regional and international marine conservation
issues – including coral reef health, climate change and the role of
marine protected areas. The relatively unknown waters of Cuba, the
near-pristine state of many of its coral reefs and ecosystems, and its
unique geographical location and ecological interconnections with the
U.S. and Mexico make a compelling case for leveraging the 10-year
success of this program into a program that can address the critical
scientific and policy questions of our time.
The Project Coordinator position will be responsible for running key
programs, including the Trinational Initiative for Marine Research and
Conservation in the Gulf of Mexico and Western Caribbean, a group of
scientists from Mexico, Cuba and the US that has performed joint
research activities since 2007. Programmatic work will include meeting
planning and coordination, maintaining communications and relations with
US, Cuban and Mexican partners, reporting and fundraising.
Additionally, this position will coordinate the new educational exchange
program, through which U.S. citizens will travel to Cuba to interact and
learn from Cuban scientists. Responsibilities will include trip planning
and coordination, promotion, and fundraising. This position will also
assist the Project Director in developing new programmatic initiatives
with the Cuban partners and be responsible for fundraising
CMRC is seeking a professional with an advanced degree in a relevant
field (biology, ecology, international relations, policy, etc), together
with at least five years of program leadership experience. Experience
with grant writing, reporting and management a plus.
Understanding/knowledge of Cuban policy and/or policy work in Latin
America also a plus. Candidates should have excellent writing skills, an
ability and desire to travel extensively, and be fluent in English and
Spanish. The ability to work independently, and as part of a small
(two-person) team, as well as great coordination and planning skills is
necessary. Location preferences include Miami, Mexico and Washington,
DC, but not necessary.
If interested, please send cover letter and resume to info at oceanfdn.org
<mailto:info at oceanfdn.org> with “Cuba Project” in the subject line.
Deadline for submissions is January 31, 2013

Post-Doctoral Position, Institut Català de Ciències del Clima
Barcelona, Spain
The Institut Català de Ciències del Clima (IC3) is a climate institution
created by the Government of Catalunya and the University of Barcelona,
aiming at understanding climate change and variability, the dynamics and
theory underlying those changes and the impact on society. IC3 focus on
the Mediterranean regions, tropical Africa, South America and Southeast
Asia.
The Climate Forecasting Unit (CFU) undertakes research to forecast
global climate variations from one month to several years into the
future (also known as seasonal-to-decadal prediction). The unit members
also investigate the impact of climate variability in socio-economic
sectors, and the management of such risk via the development of climate
services for renewable energy, insurance, etc. For details, see
http://ic3cfu.wikispot.org
We are looking to recruit a 24 month full-time Climate Scientist to
investigate the seasonal to decadal predictability of the Arctic Sea ice
cover and its impact on the European Climate. The successful applicant
will be heavily involved in:
The nationally funded PICA-ICE project (Previsión Interanual de la
Cubierta de hielo marino del Ártico y su impacto en el Clima Europeo;
http://www.ic3.cat/detail_project.php?menu=180&project=18&idioma=1).
The EU-funded SPECS Project (Seasonal-to-decadal climate Prediction for
the improvement of European Climate Services,
http://www.specs-fp7.eu/SPECS/Home.html).
The UK-funded APPOSITE project (Arctic Predicatability and Prediction On
Seasonal to Interannual Timescales).
The successful applicant will perform statistical analyses on the most
recent observational datasets and reanalyses to extract the mechanisms
driving the Arctic sea ice cover variability and its relation to the
European climate. The candidate will assess their predictability in a
perfect model ‘approach’, which consists in assessing to which extent a
model is able to reproduce its own variability. He/she will estimate the
actual forecast skill in retrospective predictions. The core of the
tasks will consist in the statistical analysis of the large amount of
already available data. At a later stage, sensitivity experiments can be
designed and run by the successful applicant depending on the initial
results from statistical analyses. The simulations to be analysed have
been produced with the EC-Earth climate model, which includes LIM2 sea
ice model. They can also be repeated at a later stage with both LIM3 and
GELATO6 sea ice model.
