5. Sea Ice Modeller, British Antarctic Survey

Cambridge, UK

Based within the Polar Oceans programme at our Cambridge office, you
will be part of a team investigating oceanographic variability in the
Southern Ocean and the Arctic, and its impacts on the Earth System. The
group runs sophisticated idealised, regional and global oceanographic
models (including sea ice and ice shelf components) to simulate past
conditions and predict how the ocean will evolve in the future. Models
are run on local and national supercomputing facilities.

You will be responsible for running a model of the Southern Ocean and
its sea ice in order to study trends in Antarctic sea ice over the last
3 decades. This work is part of a collaborative NERC project between
oceanographers, meteorologists, and climate scientists at BAS, the
National Oceanography Centre in Southampton, and the Met Office Hadley
Centre in Exeter. The ultimate aim of the project is to understand why
Antarctic sea ice has expanded in recent decades, in sharp contrast to
the dramatic decline in ice witnessed in the Arctic.

8. Postdoctoral Position, University of Stockholm

Stockholm, Sweden

The main focus of this postdoctoral project is to quantify emissions of
CO2 and CH4 and characterize the emission sources during the SWERUS-C3
cruise to the Eastern Siberian Arctic Sea. We invite applications from
creative and highly motivated investigators with experience in eddy
covariance measurements of trace gases (particularly from moving
platforms), micrometeorology, laser spectroscopy and/or numerical
characterization of boundary layer exchange of energy and mass. The
position will require at least a 45 day deployment of the I/B Oden to
the Arctic Ocean.

9. Postdoctoral Position (Arctic Ocean modeling), University of Stockholm

Stockholm, Sweden

Future climate projections remain uncertain because of poorly
constrained Earth system feedbacks. The enormous quantities of carbon
presently stored on and along Arctic Ocean margins is a significant
example. SWERUS-C3 (Swedish –Russian – US Arctic Ocean Investigation of
Climate-Cryosphere-Carbon Interactions, http://swerus-c3.geo.su.se
<http://swerus-c3.geo.su.se/>/) is a multi-disciplinary program aimed to
investigate the linkages between climate, cryosphere and carbon release
from the sediment. This postdoctoral project addresses a fundamental
scientific question within the SWERUS-C3 program: how does past Arctic
Ocean circulation influence gas hydrate stability conditions and methane
fluxes from the continental slope? This research question is possible to
approach using different methods. We invite applications interested in
applying one or a combination of the following two approaches to the
problem:

1. General Ocean Circulation Modelling
2. Dynamic modelling of gas hydrate stability

A high resolution (0.25º) Arctic-Atlantic Ocean general circulation
model has recently been setup at Stockholm University based on the NEMO
ocean modelling framework. This model is available to this project.

10. Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Norwegian Polar Institute

Tromso, Norway

The successful applicant will be expected to carry out and analyze
spectral and broadband measurements of solar radiative fluxes, along
with optically relevant measurements of sea-ice and snow physical
properties. The results are to be published in a timely fashion in
international journals. Carrying out the measurements will require field
work in the Arctic to install autonomous setups and perform in-situ
measurements (diving will be carried out by a separate team of divers).
The field work will likely be done from both ships and coastal sites.

The goals of the project are to better understand the seasonal and
spatial variability of the transmission of solar radiation through sea
ice in the Arctic, particularly the first- and second-year ice that is
now so widespread, and to learn about the effect this energy has on the
upper ocean, ocean-ice interaction, and biological activity. The goals
will be met through a series of in-situ and autonomous measurements
across the Arctic. The in-situ measurements will focus on small-scale
variability by using spectral radiometers carried by divers or remotely
operated vehicles to measure transmittance at many locations beneath an
ice floe. The autonomous measurements will measure broadband
transmittance at individual points (fixed in the ice) across the Arctic,
capturing seasonal changes and variability. The data will be analyzed to
provide a conceptual understanding of the variability of light
transmittance through today’s thinner Arctic sea-ice cover and to
examine the consequences of the resulting energy fluxes into the Arctic
Ocean.

14. Intern, Metrics, Conservation International

Arlington, VA

The mission of Conservation International (CI) is to build upon a strong
foundation of science, partnership and field demonstration, in order to
empower societies to responsibly and sustainably care for nature, our
global biodiversity, for the well-being of humanity. The internship will
support CI’s efforts to create and implement a multi-dimensional
“dashboard” of indicators for monitoring trends in natural capital,
effective governance, sustainable production, and human well-being
across the 20+ geographies where CI works. The dashboard will enable CI
to better understand and communicate the effectiveness of the
organization’s efforts in achieving our mission.

The intern will support two key analyses:

  * assessment of national policies to promote environmental
sustainability across CI’s 20+ country programs; and
  * synthesis of existing national and global datasets and studies on
sustainable production across three key sectors: extractives,
    agriculture, and fisheries.

Key products generated by this internship include:

  * baseline datasets on policy effectiveness for all CI country programs;
  * datasets on production statistics for each key sector; and
  * data collection and management system for subsequent updating.
