The California Ocean Science Trust (OST, www.calost.org
<http://www.calost.org/>) is a non-profit organization established
pursuant to the Coastal Ocean Resources Stewardship Act of 2000 to
provide scientific guidance to the state on ocean policy issues. Our
mission is to advance a constructive role for science in decision-making
by promoting collaboration and mutual understanding among scientists,
citizens, managers and policymakers working towards sustained, healthy
and productive coastal and ocean ecosystems. Current initiatives within
OST focus on advancing MPA monitoring, sustainable fisheries management,
and science to support policy and management responses to climate
change, including ocean acidification. OST is looking for a dynamic and
energetic Senior Scientist and Associate Scientist to join our team and
advance these initiatives.

OST is pleased to offer this exceptional opportunity for an innovative
and energetic candidate interested in advancing state priorities at the
intersection of marine science and policy. Drawing on his/her deep
knowledge of marine ecological systems, the Senior Scientist will
identify and pursue strategic opportunities to advance science-informed
decision-making on a range of state-priority ocean issues including
MPAs, fisheries, and climate effects on marine ecosystems. With the
statewide MPA network as a foundation, the Senior Scientist will design
collaborative and robust processes to engage a broad constituency in key
issues, deploy tools and approaches to advance a constructive dialogue,
and develop new pathways to integrate science into ocean resource
management and policy. The Senior Scientist will work closely with OST’s
programmatic leads in social science, technology and communications and
collaborate with a range of partners, including state agencies, tribes,
researchers and stakeholders. Reporting directly to the OST Program
Director, the successful candidate will supervise and mentor staff
including Associate and Project Scientists with diverse natural science,
management and policy expertise. The position will be based in Oakland,
California. The preferred start date is on or before June 1, 2013.

cost-effective monitoring of the network of marine protected areas
established in California. We are pioneering scientific and practical
assessments of the changing condition of ocean ecosystems and the
performance of MPA networks, and developing innovative approaches for
sharing monitoring results so that decision-makers and stakeholders have
timely, credible information for making sound management decisions. The
