Post-Doc, Michigan State University
We seek a postdoctoral research associate to join the QFC and contribute
to quantitative fisheries research including statistical and simulation
modeling in collaboration with other Quantitative Fisheries Center (QFC)
staff and our collaborators. Initially specific tasks will include: (1)
conducting statistical modeling of sea lamprey marking data to evaluate
patterns in marking related to host size, season, type of mark, host
density, and other explanatory patterns; (2) assist in applying
bioenergetics models to estimate consumption of major predators in Lake
Huron; and (3) use of consumption estimates from task two as basis for
evaluating food-web effects - this will involve literature review to put

Joint Professorship in Mangrove Ecology, Universitat Bremen
Bremen, Germany
Tropical coastal ecosystems are highly productive habitats with
increasing ecological and economic importance.
The Leibniz Center for Tropical Marine Ecology (ZMT) is dedicated to the
study of these ecosystems and the services they provide to society. The
mission of ZMT is therefore the investigation of tropical marine
ecosystems, their resources, their sensitivity and the responses to
natural environmental changes and human interactions. The aim of ZMT is
to develop concepts for integrated coastal zone management based on the
scientific analysis of tropical ecosystems in their complexity. To
address this topic, ZMT is designed as a trans- and interdisciplinary
institute.
ZMT is currently seeking to fill a Professorship in Mangrove Ecology in
co-operation with the University of Bremen. Mangrove forests fulfil many
important ecological and societal functions. They provide coastal
protection, act as filters for sediments and pollutants, provide habitat
for organisms that are important food resources for the coastal
population, serve as CO2 storage, and are therefore of global
importance. For this position we seek a candidate who ideally has
research experience in the ecology and physiology of mangrove
ecosystems, but even more important is the ability to develop innovative
research concepts that contribute to ZMT’s mission. The successful
candidate is expected to design and conduct research both in the field
and in ZMT’s Marine Experimental Ecology facility (MAREE) that offers
the unique opportunity to conduct supplementary experiments under
controlled tropical conditions.
