Program Manager - Climate Change Adaptation, Wildlife Conservation Society

The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) seeks a Program Manager to lead its Climate Change Adaptation efforts in Papua New Guinea.  WCS focuses on implementing community-based and scientifically sound conservation strategies that integrate climate change.  The position involves overseeing the implementation of the ‘Strengthening the ability of vulnerable island communities in Papua New Guinea to adapt to climate change’ (‘CCA’) project. Associate to participate in a multi-institutional synthesis and modeling project to inform ecosystem based management in the Gulf of Mexico. This project will involve the integration of marine ecosystem observations and modeling, to examine the impact of management on the production of ecosystem services and the testing of alternative management strategies. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Marine Ecology, or a related field. The successful candidate should have experience with ecosystem modeling and management evaluations, as well as with the synthesis and analysis of ecosystem data. Strong communication and computer skills, the ability to work with large amounts of data, and familiarity with ecosystem models (such as ATLANTIS, NPZD, or bioenergetics) are required. Intern/Assistant Adviser for the Asia/Oceania Region, IUCN

The Convention on Wetlands, signed in Ramsar, Iran, in 1971, is an intergovernmental treaty that provides the framework for national action and international cooperation for the conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources. The Ramsar Convention is independent of the United Nations system of environmental treaties and reports only to its own Contracting Parties, or Member States. The Secretariat operations are administered by IUCN, the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

The Convention Secretariat, which currently comprises 21 employees, is co-located with the world headquarters of IUCN in Gland (near Geneva), Switzerland.

The Secretariat initiated a regional internship programme in 1997 which allows four interns to assist the respective Senior Regional Advisors in their day to day work within the Secretariat. The tasks will rarely involve field work. Exceptionally interns could be asked to visit projects or participate in meetings abroad. There will also be opportunities to attend international meetings held in Geneva and to become acquainted with other international agencies based there.

With an upper age limit for applicants of 30 years old, the post offers an opportunity for young graduates to become acquainted with the workings of an intergovernmental treaty dealing with the conservation and sustainable use of natural resources.

Candidates should be prepared to provide services for a period of at least 12 months. The assignment will be subject to a two-month probationary period. After six months of service, the Secretariat may offer an intern an extension of up to six months, i.e. for a maximum period of 18 months' service.

We are looking for detail-oriented individuals who will assist on a variety of ongoing research projects and develop an independent project/experiment under the direction of the resident scientists. Preference will be given to applicants with GIS training and is considering the fields of environmental or aquatic/marine sciences as a career. Qualifications:
Requirements: Applicants should have a strong undergraduate background in the aquatic and/or marine sciences, including additional coursework in GIS environmental, ecological, or related sciences. The successful applicant will be expected to assist with lab and field efforts and develop an independent research project within 1 month of arrival (with our assistance) and complete the independent project during the internship. The intern must be able to swim in water of various temperatures and have a mask, fins, and a snorkel for field work. The successful applicant will be required to participate heavily in the work of the lab, sometimes involving long hours (potentially evening or weekends), often under difficult field conditions (must be able to lift 50 lbs.). The intern should also be prepared to work in subtropical conditions, including typical south Florida's hot and humid conditions.
