This position serves as a Interdisciplinary - Deputy Executive Director for the North Slope Science Initiative (NSSI) office with the Alaska State Office.  The incumbent must be well versed in both the physical and biological science disciplines and is expected to work in an interdisciplinary environment.  The mission of the NSSI is to enhance the quality and quantity of the scientific information available for aquatic, terrestrial and marine environments on Alaska's North Slope and to make this information available to decision makers, Government agencies, industry and the public.  This mission will be accomplished through a integrated approach that ensures an efficient method to conduct inventory, monitoring and research activities on the North Slope.  This initiative will provide the decision support for land use decisions that impact the North Slope, and the nation, through the National Energy Policy.  The NSSI provides consultation and recommendations to Federal, State and local organizations, and scientific institutions on the science needed for making sound management decisions on resource development on the North Slope of Alaska and in the marine environment.

Beach Nesting Bird Assistant, Nature Conservancy

The Beach Nesting Bird Assistant conducts monitoring and public outreach along with preserve maintenance at the South Cape May Meadows Preserve located in Cape May, NJ.
This may include one or more of the following functions:

 *   Assist with the management, scientific monitoring and surveillance of several species of beach nesting birds.
 *   Conduct regular beach patrols, to detect and remedy problems on-site including various forms of trespass, vandalism, attractive nuisance.

Shedd Aquarium seeks to play a central role in a global venture to study the ecology of seahorses, and develop local stakeholder/citizen science programs to support seahorse conservation. The successful candidate is expected to work closely with Project Seahorse, a marine conservation organization committed to the conservation and sustainable use of the world’s coastal marine ecosystems, based out of University of British Columbia (Canada) and the Zoological Society of London (UK). Volunteer Coordinator, Santa Monica Pier Aquarium

The Santa Monica Pier Aquarium offers school groups, families and visitors a unique view into the ocean world just outside its doors and is home to hundreds of organisms native to the Santa Monica Bay.



Interactive displays, touch tanks filled with tide pool animals, a shark tank, Kids’ Corner, and a scientific microscope lab are some of the main features of the Aquarium. The Santa Monica Pier Aquarium is seeking applications for a full time Volunteer Coordinator who will be responsible for scheduling, recruiting, training and managing volunteers. This position will also be responsible for facilitating programming during public hours and backing up the birthday party programs. The Volunteer Coordinator will work five days a week with Tuesdays and Thursdays off and will report directly to, and work closely with, the Public Programs Manager.

Mobile Exhibit Coordinator, Mote Marine Lab

This position is responsible for coordinating the activities of the Mobile Exhibit.  The Mobile Exhibit is one of Mote’s most important outreach tools which travels to venues including, but not limited to: Schools, State and County Fairs, festivals, private engagements and other public events.

Duties will include, but are not limited to: driving the Exhibit vehicle, scheduling events, daily cleaning and maintenance of the Mobile truck, Aquarium, its supporting exhibits and life support systems; strict attention to water quality and animal health; following careful feeding regimes and animal husbandry record keeping.

As scheduling permits, the Mobile Exhibit Coordinator will participate in the design, development and installation of new fresh and saltwater exhibits including aquariums and associated graphics.  The Mobile Exhibit Coordinator will also assist Aquarium staff with daily exhibit maintenance, which may include SCUBA dives. This position will work closely with staff, volunteers, and contractors. Any other duties in support of Aquarium activities as assigned by the Exhibit Manager.

The Global Marine division of Conservation International is looking for 3 part-time, non-paid graduate student interns.  The interns will learn about a major new project, the Ocean Health Index, through research.  The internship will also give interns exposure to senior scientists, development of a sophisticated website, and experience in research and writing.

Interns will be asked to research various aspects of ocean health as the informational basis for the website development teams.  The research for the Ocean Health Index is submitted monthly, interpreted by a senior scientist and then sent to the interns. Discussions of additional information, sources, and special features are discussed. Each intern will take certain topics to explore using computer research and telephone inquiries.

Interns will work in Conservation International Headquarters Crystal City, VA. The atmosphere is casual, relaxed, and flexible.

The Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences has received National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) funding to support 4-8 fellowships for undergraduate student research at BIOS during the 2012 fall semester (Dates: arrive on August 29, 2012 - depart on November 25, 2012). Students will design and conduct independent projects under faculty supervision within several research areas including:

* Biology, chemistry and physics of the open ocean
* Biology, physiology and biochemistry of reef building corals and reef ecosystems
* Aspects of the molecular biology of marine organisms
* Environmental chemistry of Bermuda's atmosphere and inshore waters
* Effects and consequences of global environmental change

Students who have completed at least two years of undergraduate study and will still be undergraduates in the fall of 2012 are eligible to apply. Minorities and women are especially encouraged. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. We encourage all successful applicants to arrange for independent study credit through their home institutions. Each successful REU applicant will receive a stipend paid at competitive rates. Students will reside on the BIOS campus. Travel expenses, tuition, room and board will be covered by the REU program.
