Bermuda
Background:
The Bermuda government has committed to Marine Spatial Planning (MSP)
for its nearshore waters on the Bermuda Platform (i.e., mean high tide
to ~200 m depth). The process of developing a zoning plan for the
Platform will be led by the Departments of Environmental Protection
(DEP) and Conservation Services (DCS), with input and involvement from
numerous other government departments. Researchers from the University
of California Santa Barbara (UCSB), with financial support from the
Waitt Foundation, have committed to providing scientific and
analytical support to evaluate alternative proposed spatial plans and to
identify MSP options that maximize the collective value of Bermuda’s
ocean uses (i.e., commercial and recreational fishing, diving, boating,
shipping, conservation, aquaculture, offshore energy, etc.) and minimize
conflicts across the different uses and priorities. A Steering
Committee, jointly chaired by DEP and DCS, will lead the public policy
process and will include representatives from all relevant government
departments. A Technical Working Group, also with inter-departmental
representation, will be responsible for developing and evaluating
alternative spatial plans, with analytical support from UCSB. The
process is anticipated to take multiple years and will include extensive
government input, data compilation, analysis and modeling of spatial
plans, detailed public consultation and government approval, plus
additional time for implementation.
Position Description:

Government (DEP and DCS) and the Bermuda Institue of Ocean Sciences
(BIOS), is seeking a qualified individual to serve as the Coordinator

Program Director, Global Ocean Legacy, Pew Environment Group
Washington, DC
Global Ocean Legacy is a project of the Pew Environment Group that works
to protect and conserve some of the Earth’s most important and unspoiled
marine ecosystems through the establishment of very large, highly
protected marine reserves.
Since 2005, Global Ocean Legacy has been instrumental in securing the
full protection of almost 1.5 million square kilometres of the globe’s
most spectacular seascapes, including more than half of the highly
protected no-take marine reserves now in place worldwide.
Our efforts, working with national and local governments, locally-based
conservation organizations and indigenous people to help build public
support for marine reserves, have led to the designation of the
Papaha-naumokua-kea Marine National Monument in Hawaii, the Mariana
Trench Marine National Monument in the Commonwealth of the Northern
Mariana Islands (US), the Chagos Marine Reserve (UK) in the Indian
Ocean—the largest no-take marine reserve in the world – and the recent
announcement by the Australian government of a half million square
kilometer marine park in the Coral Sea.
Currently, project staff is working to achieve the designation of some
of the largest potential marine reserves in the world in the Kermadec
Islands, Easter Island, Bermuda, the Pitcairn Islands, and South Georgia
and the South Sandwich Islands and are investigating additional sites in
the French overseas territories.
Position Overview
The Program Director, Global Ocean Legacy, is responsible for the
overall management, and successful completion of the on-the-ground
project site efforts to establish very large, no-take marine reserves.
Individual marine reserve sites are currently underway in eight
political jurisdictions. Each will take from two to six years to
complete and are directly managed by in-country staff. The Program
Director is responsible for general oversight, strategic direction, and
ultimate success of these sites and their in-country staff. The
position will directly supervise five directors and be broadly
responsible for the eight projects currently underway.
This position is part of the Global Ocean Legacy management team within
the Pew Environment Group, and reports to the Project Director, Global
Ocean Legacy. The position is located in Washington DC. It is expected
that this position is for a term period through June 30, 2017, with the
