The successful applicant will work with the chair of the science steering committee of the U.S. Interagency Study of Environmental Arctic Change (SEARCH; http://www.arcus.org/search), focusing on science coordination and background research relevant to the program. Marine Programs Associate, Island Institute

The Marine Programs Associate will work closely with the rest of Marine Programs staff to implement the Institute's programs. The Marine Programs Associate will work on projects primarily focused on sustainable federally-managed fisheries. This work will include providing staff support for creative partnerships with fishing communities in Maine, including fishing gear research projects and the Institute's groundfish permit bank; as well as providing administrative support for a collaborative network of community-based fisheries organizations across the country. The Marine Programs Associate will also provide staff support for the Marine Programs Director on fisheries management and policy issues as they move through the New England Fisheries Management Council and National Marine Fisheries Service. In addition, the Marine Programs Associate is expected to work with other staff as needed on issues related to the marketing and branding of ethically-harvested seafood; working waterfront preservation; offshore wind energy; climate change; marine spatial planning and other projects that emerge.

Postdoctoral position on the microbial ecology of marine invertebrates, WHOI and KAUST

A 3-year shared postdoc position between the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and KAUST's (King Abdullah University of Science and Technology) Red Sea Research Center is available from March, 2012 on.

The project is an international collaboration between the Voolstra lab at KAUST (http://faculty.kaust.edu.sa/sites/christianvoolstra/Pages/home.aspx) and the newly established Apprill lab at WHOI in the Marine Chemistry & Geochemistry Department (http://www.whoi.edu/sbl/liteSite.do?litesiteid=39752). The postdoc will work jointly at WHOI and KAUST in a Collaborative Fellows program.

The project focuses on microbial ecology of marine invertebrates and will involve bacterial genome sequencing, assembly, and annotation, FISH-based detection of microbial communities, and metabolomics profiling of bacterial cultivates using mass spectrometry.

The ideal candidate is expected to be an independent and motivated individual with excellent communication skills and a degree in any of the following disciplines: Microbial Ecology, Genomics, Bioinformatics, and/or Marine Biology. Sound knowledge in any or all skills is welcome: sequence assembly, sequence annotation, microbial genome analysis, 16S data analysis (e.g. ARB, SILVA, etc.), next-generation sequence datasets, FISH, and FISH-probe and primer design.

Ecological Research Scientist, IMMS

The Institute for Marine Mammal Studies (IMMS), a private, non-profit organization located in Gulfport, Mississippi, is seeking to immediately fill the position of Ecological Research Scientist.  This position is part of a substantial interdisciplinary collaborative effort with other universities and scientists to study marine mammals both in the wild and in a controlled setting. This position will be for a period of two years with the possibility of continued employment depending on performance and funding availability.  Salary will be commensurate with experience.



Responsibilities:
Develop and conduct new research projects in wild dolphin population biology and ecology appropriate to the mission of IMMS; analyze data and prepare manuscripts for publication; write grant proposals to secure additional funding for projects; coordinate and participate in research activities between IMMS and collaborating scientists, document research progress; write reports for submission to state and federal agencies.

Qualifications:
Requires a Ph.D. in biology, marine biology, zoology, ecology, or marine science with experience in population dynamics and/or ecology, preferably with an emphasis on marine mammals. We seek a candidate with ability in publishing, report writing, and designing and conducting research projects.  Boat handling experience and experience in dolphin research, husbandry, or training a plus.  Preference will be given to candidates that are U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

Postdoctoral Researcher (3 yrs) - Circulation in the South West Indian Ocean, NIOZ

This project aims at determination of the circulation through the Mozambique Channel and in the East Madagascar Current, the long-term temporal and spatial structure, and its hydrographical properties. Our observations near Madagascar already started in 2000 and are still ongoing. The project is jointly funded by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO) and NIOZ. INATEX is carried out in cooperation with the Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research of Utrecht University (IMAU). The postdoctoral researcher will take part in research cruises to recover and re-deploy the current meter arrays near Madagascar. He/she will be responsible for the data processing and for the scientific analysis.

Two month contract literature review position



We seek a researcher with training in marine ecology, environmental economics, and/or marine resource management to perform a review of the literature pertaining to the characterization and use of thresholds and indicators in marine spatial planning and ecosystem based management. The qualified candidate will have excellent research, organizational and communication skills and be comfortable reading, critically reviewing and synthesizing large amounts of information from disparate fields, including ecology, economics, anthropology, sociology and management science. Experience with marine resource management in general and in particular from the California Current is desirable, but not required. The candidate must be able to work well independently. Location could be in Santa Barbara, where the project is based, or other location of the researcher's choosing. Some graduate-level training in a relevant field is required, but this project could be appropriate for a current graduate student.



Start date: January 1, 2012

End date: February 29, 2012



Time commitment and compensation: 10-15 hours/week at $15/hour
