Policy Specialist

The Consortium for Ocean Leadership is pleased to announce the search for a Policy Specialist to work with the Senior Policy Manager to conduct public policy activities.  The Policy Specialist contributes to the implementation of legislative and outreach strategies, maintaining relationships with key congressional and federal agency staff regarding ocean science, research, and education issues.  This position edits congressional testimony, communication documents and policy statements. The position also facilitates Ocean Leadership membership participation with and outreach to Congress, the Administration and federal agencies for relevant policy issues. The Policy Specialist reports directly to the Senior Policy Manager.

Qualifications include:  (1) Bachelor's degree in policy, law, or science or equivalent experience in a relevant field and a minimum of 3 years of experience in science policy. Advance degree preferred with combination of work and educational experience; (2) Experience working in a Federal Agency or Congressional office, including development of legislative or policy proposals; (3) Knowledge of the oceanographic research and education community; (4) Ability to interact effectively with a wide range of stakeholders including federal officials, academics, private and government funders, members of the ocean commissions and Ocean Leadership staff; (5) Strong writing, editing, presentation and speaking skills; (6) Strong organizational skills, including setting priorities, articulating strategies and managing for results; (7) Proficiency in working with all forms of public media and with MS Office applications including MS Word, Excel, and Power Point.
