The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) seeks a Marine Director to lead its marine conservation efforts in Papua New Guinea and facilitate participation and support for the Coral Triangle Initiative.  WCS focuses on implementing community-based and scientifically sound conservation strategies to improve the management of coastal marine ecosystems, with a particular emphasis on coral reefs. The program primarily focuses on:  i) working closely with local communities to protect reef systems and ecosystem integrity ii) promotion of sustainable small-scale fisheries  iii)adaptation to climate change, and iv) training and capacity building in marine conservation. Congo Basin Coast (CBC) Program Manager - Consultancy Position

Position Description: For 25 years, WCS has been leading conservation in Central Africa and has recently expanded this mission to the waters of the Congo Basin Coast-seawards of Congo and Gabon.  WCS' conservation efforts include targeted species interventions on cetaceans, sea turtles, and West African manatees, support for a network of marine and coastal protected areas and mitigation of challenges such as fisheries throughout the CBC.  The CBC Program Manager coordinates across WCS efforts both in region and globally to develop, coordinate and implement the growing conservation commitment in the region.  Principle responsibilities include raising funds, coordinating and leveraging the combined coastal activities of WCS in region, assist in development of workplans, implantation and monitoring of field activities and build cohesion and collaboration among the Congo Basin Coast WCS team and partners.

Overall Function

Key Responsibilities

DESCRIPTION:

Coastal Louisiana Organizer

We seek a Coastal Louisiana Organizer to reach out to, educate, and engage leaders of underserved communities at risk of losing coastal land; particularly in New Orleans and to a lesser degree, throughout southeast Louisiana. These communities are highly impacted by coastal land loss; therefore, community participation will be critical in order to establish a well-rounded and strong Coastal Campaign. Focusing on churches, elected officials, and university networks, the Coastal Louisiana Organizer will identify leaders in under-served communities, provide information about the Coastal Campaign, and explore potential collaboration. He or she will identify points of convergence between the interests and objectives of the communities represented and NWF's Coastal Campaign goals, raise community awareness of coastal policy issues, and develop relationships to advance the Coastal Campaign. The temporary campaign plan will serve as a strong starting point for NWF to engage with and empower diverse communities to have a stronger voice for coastal protection and restoration at the local and national levels. The Coastal Louisiana Organizer is a temporary position through July 31, 2011 and has strong expectations for a multi-year extension.

Program Manager - Ocean

Lead the Ocean Education team at National Geographic to design materials and manage specific projects that extend National Geographic's mission into formal and informal learning environments. Act as a liaison between Education Programs, the Mission Programs Ocean team, and other departments within the Society doing Ocean related work to identify opportunities for collaboration and cross-departmental projects.

The management role takes an individual project from conception/brainstorming with colleagues and partners, to program and/or materials creation, through production and distribution. Project managers work with external partners as needed, and are also involved in the promotion and development of their project through presentations, public events, and professional development opportunities.

Ocean education materials produced in NGEP will range from complete curricula, to collections of lesson plans, activities, teaching posters, family guides, videos, toolkits, and other resources. Materials are created in print and digital formats and may be prepared for distribution on paper, on CD-ROM/DVDs, or on the web via pdf, narrated Powerpoint, videos and other formats. Materials will be designed as in-classroom, informal, and outdoor experiences for pK-12 students, families, the public, and the ocean recreation community.

This is an 2 year position through January 2013.

Five Responsibilities:
1. Develop strategy and implementation plan for Ocean education initiative in National Geographic Education Programs. Coordinate plans and programs with Ocean initiative throughout the Society, integrating research, media development and other available resources. Maintain involvement and communication with the extended Ocean education community and potential partners outside of the society.

2. Assemble project teams and manage projects as assigned. Oversee project timelines, budget, program and materials development. Hire and manage contract staff as necessary including scientists, teacher-contributors, freelance writers and expert reviewers. Serve as liaison to project partners (internal and external) and manage plans for project publicity, dissemination and training as appropriate.

3. Develop project material and program content based on research and needs assessment. Design, develop and review instructional and reference content on Ocean topics for multiple audiences and age groups (preK-12, families, informal and outdoor) using the resources of the Society including maps, videos, images, research and access to content experts. Develop and deliver professional development for educators, conference and marketing presentations, and other public programs.

4. Collaborate within EP, Missions and throughout the Society around Ocean projects and content. Collaborate with external organizations around their Ocean initiatives. Actively seek out opportunities and manage collaboration projects.

5. Participate in department-wide programs and innovation. Stay current with NGS mission, research, initiatives and media, and assist the team in leveraging these assets. Undertake other duties as requested.

Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in education, geography, oceanography, or related field. Masters degree highly preferred. Training and experience in instructional materials design required. Proven experience in managing materials development and/or program-producing projects (including personnel, budgets, timeline, print production process, fulfillment, distribution and promotion). Experience working under deadlines. Workplace or academic background in geography, oceanography or related discipline.

6-10 years program management experience. Classroom teaching experience preferred.

Excellent project management and organizational skills with a high attention to detail; self-direction and motivation; sensitivity to deadline-driven workflow; ability to handle a variety of projects with changing priorities in a dynamic environment. Excellent oral and written communication skills, proficiency with Microsoft suite, organization and ability to multi-task in a fast-paced, deadline-driven business environment. Post-doc position in reef fish macro-ecology

Background

This position is part of the GASPAR program and financed by the FRB ("Fondation pour la Recherche sur la Biodiversit?" -- a French State Organization). The aim of GASPAR is the macro-ecological analysis of reef fish assemblages on a world-wide scale in order to understand their
major functioning principles. The scientific program may be asked to M.Kulbicki (michel.kulbicki at ird.fr<mailto:michel.kulbicki at ird.fr>). This program is based on the principle of several meetings a year at the CESAB center (in France) during which the members of this program brainstorm on the questions and hypotheses in order to produce scientific information (mainly analytical and synthetic articles) and build a database which will be made freely available to the scientific community at the end of the program.

Skills :

The candidate should be skilled in the following domains: (a) theoretical ecology or community ecology; (b) statistics; (c) databases; (d) GIS. Fluent English is required; French is not required but would be advantageous. The role will consist of: (1) organizing a database which will compile information on the diversity of reef fishes from a wide selection of sites across the world, on their life-history traits, and on environmental factors. These data will originate from the members of
the program and from existing international databases; (2) preparation of the meetings in order to facilitate the writing of analytical and synthesis articles on the macro-ecology of reef fishes. This preparation entails statistical pre-analyses, maps and the compilation of important references; (3) participation in the coordination of the project, in particular by liaising between the partners of this program; (4) contribute to the writing of scientific articles issued from this work.

The candidate will work with some of the best specialist in coral reef fish ecology. A number of high impact factor scientific articles are expected from this program, to which the candidate will be associated and in some instances be first author (depending on the degree of involvement). There should be also opportunities to attend international meetings and to meet renowned scientists in the field of reef ecology.

Contract duration and salary

The post-doc will be based at the "Laboratoire Arago" in Banyuls/mer (France --http://www.obs-banyuls.fr/) and will be under the supervision of Michel Kulbicki, the person in charge of the GASPAR program.

The contract is for 30 months and will start in July 2011. The net monthly pay will be around 1900 euros, this amount varying slightly according to the social security and welfare costs.

This position is located in the National Marine Fisheries Service, Nortwest Region, Protected Resources Division in Seattle, Washington.


The primary duties of the position will be to complete projects for the Marine Species Branch of the Protected Resources Division of NOAA Fisheries' Northwest Region.  The position will divide time between two primary activities: supporting the Puget Sound salmon recovery coordinator, and promoting implementation of the Southern Resident killer whale recovery plan.  In both activities, the position will provide staffing support to senior employees, participate in committees and teams (inter- and intra-agency) to address recovery of salmonids, killer whales, and the Puget Sound ecosystem.   This will include the development and implementation of recovery plans for species listed under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) (e.g., salmon, steelhead, killer whales, Steller sea lions); reviewing and making recommendations on ESA section 4(d), 7, and 10 applications and assessments; reviewing and developing species' status reports; managing recovery teams; and participating in collaborative efforts to recover at-risk marine species.   The position will develop reports, analyze federal and non-federal actions, and participate in and manage National Environmental Policy Act reviews.  The position will also maintain a visible profile and work constructively with stakeholders, such as Indian tribes, state and local governments, recovery planners, Governor's and Department of Fisheries and Oceans offices, conservation groups, and natural resource user groups.  The successful applicant must demonstrate a thorough knowledge of marine mammal and fish species and their ecosystems; be familiar with information sources regarding their conservation; have a strong background in the ESA and the Marine Mammal Protection Act; and experience with the National Environmental Policy Act. The successful applicant will also be highly skilled at preparing persuasive written and oral presentations, reports, and agency findings.
