Harmful algae, toxins and fish kills 

 

International PhD course, June 11 - 17, 2014, Marine Biological Section, Helsingør - University of Copenhagen

 

Objectives: This PhD course aims at presenting different aspects of  harmful algae in marine waters and their effects on  fauna, particularly on fish. 

Special emphasis on 

1) Identification and quantification of fish-killing species using PCR and advanced microscopy, 

2) Production and loss rates of fish killing algae; nutrient uptake, mixotrophy, and grazing by zooplankton, 

3) Identification and quantification of implicated toxins and their modes of action, 

4) Effects of fish killing algae on behaviour and physiology of fish.  

 

A typical day will include 2-3 lectures in the morning, followed by hands-on demonstrations of methods and techniques, theoretical and practical exercises in the early afternoon. During late afternoon and the evening, students will carry out a project under expert supervision. These projects will be planned ahead of the course start as a collaboration between teachers and student groups. The course is evaluated via presentations and student projects. During the course participants will also be asked to present their own research.

 

Credits: 5 ECTS

 

Target group and application: 16 PhD students and/or younger scientists. Applications should contain a brief CV and a short description of research interests and motivation for applying. In case of  >16 students, the organizers will select the course participants.   

Teachers: Per Juel Hansen, Nikolaj Gedsted Andersen, John Fleng Steffensen, Øjvind Moestrup, and Niels Daugbjerg (UoC), Thomas Ostenfeld Larsen, Kristian F. Nielsen, Kevin Jørgensen (DTU), and two invited experts from abroad. 

Costs: The course fee is 600 EUR covering materials, and full catering during the course period. The participants must organise and cover all expenses for accommodation and travel to and from the course.
