Phytoplankton Biology Research Officer
Institute for Marine Biosciences (IMB)
Halifax, Nova Scotia Canada
The NRC Institute for Marine Biosciences is respected worldwide for its
research and technology development in marine biosciences, including
state-of-the-art analytical chemistry of biological molecules. IMB features
a broad and integrated suite of marine bioscience and biotechnology
laboratories and an aquaculture research station. IMB is an integrated
systems biology institute with the capability to investigate research
questions from the level of the genome to the whole organism. IMB's
research programs focus primarily on the areas of aquaculture, natural
toxins and mass spectrometry-proteomics. IMB is also home to the Canadian
Bioinformatics Resource, a distributed bioinformatics computing environment
and help desk available to biologists across Canada. The Institute also has
a substantial suite of state-of-the-art advanced instrumentation in mass
spectrometry-proteomics, high-throughput DNA sequencing, NMR and microscopy.
The Aquaculture Research Station is well equipped for live-animal work on
fish and shellfish, including production of live and formulated feeds.
The Phytoplankton Biology Research Officer will support the mission of NRC
and the Institute for Marine Biosciences by developing and leading an
original independent research program of international scientific caliber in
phytoplankton ecology/biology, with a primary focus on harmful marine
microalgae.
The incumbent must be prepared to work on a variety of toxic and non-toxic
phytoplankton, with a primary focus on harmful marine algae, and to
contribute their expertise to studies of microalgal nutritional value and to
solving harmful algal incidents as appropriate. The incumbent will be
expected to interact with other IMB researchers in the toxin team which
includes the following core areas: harmful algal blooms, vectors of toxins,
separation science and structural characterization of toxins, assay and
analysis methods, toxin incident problem-solving and certified reference
materials. The incumbent will also be expected to interact with other IMB
research teams, as well as with the national and international community.
The incumbent will represent NRC on local, national and international
committees related to the above research as appropriate.
