Subject: Training Courses on the Taxonomy of Harmful Microalgae: October
2003 to January 2004

I am pleased to inform of the organisation of a regional
training course (South East Asia) on the Taxonomy of Harmful Microalgae
which is being organised in collaboration with the following institutes: the
University of the Philippines, the University of Tokyo, the University of
Tasmania, the IOC Science and Communication Centre on Harmful Algae, at the
University of Copenhagen, and the Virtual University of the International
Ocean Institute.

The training course is a pilot project; it is part of a project
to establish an Internet Portal on harmful algae covering South East Asia,
named the "HABSEA Portal". The course consists of two parts: the first part
is a 3-month Internet distant learning course and second part is a 10-day
practical course using the microscope for species identification. The course
was offered the first time in first semester of 2003.

UNESCO will cover all direct costs such as travel, accommodation, and
allowances for the two associated workshops, excluding the Internet
connections and participant's fees for working hours in connection with the
distant learning part of the course. This is applicable to participants from
Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia,
Myanmar, Laos and China. Support for participants from other countries in
the region is subject to availability of funds.

Schedule and venue

The distance learning part of the course will include a
three-day introductory workshop to be held from on 6 to 8 October 2003 in
Bangkok, followed by three months of work at from the participants' home
laboratories. The estimated workload is one day per week.

The microscope course will take place from 7 to 14 January 2004.
