Dear GFD WHOI List,

The IPAM workshop “Rotating Turbulence: Interplay and Separability of Bulk and Boundary Dynamics <https://www.ipam.ucla.edu/programs/workshops/rotating-turbulence-interplay-and-separability-of-bulk-and-boundary-dynamics/?tab=application-registration>” will be held at UCLA, January 27 - 31, 2025, and will bring together the rotating turbulence community to address the complex interplay between boundary and bulk dynamics in rotating convection systems. A successful meeting will yield new theoretical, numerical and laboratory approaches for both deconvolving boundary from bulk processes and for better modeling how the boundary and bulk flows interact and alter each other. Such knowledge is necessary for building the next generation of geophysical and astrophysical fluid dynamical turbulent transport schemes and for elucidating when boundary phenomena will dominate over bulk processes in natural systems.

This workshop will include a poster session; a request for posters will be sent to registered participants in advance of the workshop. This workshop will also honor the work and contributions to the field by the late Keith Julien.

We have funding, typically for local (housing) expenses, especially to support the attendance of recent PhD’s, graduate students, and researchers in the early stages of their career; however, mathematicians and scientists at all levels who are interested in this area are encouraged to apply for funding. Encouraging the careers of women and minority mathematicians and scientists is an important component of IPAM’s mission and we welcome their applications.

The application form <https://helper.ipam.ucla.edu/wordpress_includes/signup/wp_eventsignup.aspx?pc=rti2025> is for those requesting financial support to attend the workshop. Applications received by Wednesday, November 27, 2024 will receive fullest consideration. Questions and supporting documents should be sent to the email below. Successful applicants will be notified as soon as funding decisions are made. If you do not need or want to apply for funding, you may simply register <https://helper.ipam.ucla.edu/wordpress_includes/signup/wp_eventsignup.aspx?pc=rti2025>. IPAM will close registration once we reach capacity.

Please send your questions and supporting documents to: rti2025 at ipam.ucla.edu <mailto:RTI2025 at ipam.ucla.edu>
