[Flex] Fastlane printing woes and SciENcv

Hi Jean -
I am not surprised about this.
People need to PRINT using Adobe PDF printer to save the file locally from the browser. Or download and re-print the PDF to a fresh PDF.

When receiving a document from someone other than a trusted WHOI proposal preparer, I recommend re-Distilling the document to PDF before uploading.

The other thing to remain away of: the first document in a section needs to be a 'real' clean PDF or NSF's aggregator gets upset.

Good morning,

Susan Sholi is working on an NSF collaborative proposal and has been having trouble printing the complete proposal. She has been in touch with the Help Desk and has received the following correspondence. Has anyone else had trouble with printing? We are not using the fillable forms, of course, but this may be an issue to keep in mind when working with collaborators.

Thanks,
Jean

Hi Everyone,

I am working on a proposal in Fastlane that will not print. I believe all of the WHOI documents are okay and that the problem is with one of the collaborator's documents. But there does seem to be a problem with MAC users so in case any of you are using a MAC for biosketches and C&Ps in SciENcv, I wanted to pass this along.

Best,
Susan

Good morning!

There is an advisory posted that has to do with the fillable pdf's (https://www.fastlane.nsf.gov/fastlane.jsp?t=0&idx=0<https://nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.fastlane.nsf.gov%2Ffastlane.jsp%3Ft%3D0%26idx%3D0&data=04%7C01%7C%7C6efa2a5d0bf845bcce9408d8743aae69%7Cd44c5cc6d18c46cc8abd4fdf5b6e5944%7C0%7C0%7C637387142678899894%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=bj20%2Flo%2Bok%2BALGE00IlsZSnVDxwWgD%2BWdWoImKthmYE%3D&reserved=0>) and we've included some additional tips below as well:

Issue – Some C&P and Bio sketches (most likely fillable PDFs), are causing print entire errors in Fastlane (one bad file spoils the bunch).

It can also occur on a SciencV template – However, if you look at properties closely, it is because users further processed/saved the file on a Mac.

For Mac user:

Cause: These problem files are generated by Macs with various applications. Safari, Preview are known problem applications. Chrome can also produce the same error but not consistently

How to determine a file fits this profile?

Open the file in Acrobat Adobe/File/Properties

Look at PDF Producer. It will have Quartz

Hello,

Thank you for contacting IT Help Central.

Please make sure you are using Internet Explorer or Firefox browsers. Chrome and Safari are inconsistent with our websites. Also clear your browsing history and cache, then attempt again.

This error could be due to a file corruption, which affects only the Entire Proposal print option. If you are unable to view/print your entire proposal due to the error, please attempt to view each section/module in the print view, individually as a work-around. This usually occurs when attempting to delete files from the Additional Single Copy documents section and the systems "masks" one or more of the files. This can also be due to the Biographical Sketch and Current & Pending Support documents (using fillable PDF or SciENcv document).

If the proposal is still a Temporary Proposal, go to the Print option and click on the "GO" button for EACH section (even if you believe you deleted a particular section or have "no entries" in that section). The area that mimics the error message you receive when you attempt to print the entire proposal, is the section where the error is occurring. Access that module where the error is located in the Form Preparation Page. Utilize the 'GO' button. Upload a placeholder PDF ("dummy" PDF) in that section to assist the system with "unmasking" the hidden documents. Once the files are unhidden, remove the placeholder/dummy document and the masked file from that section by clicking Delete.

Once you complete all updates, navigate back to check the Print option this should allow you to Print Entire Proposal. *Please note* It MAY show as no current files due to the corrupted file, this is a known anomaly, the files will show up after the placeholder/dummy PDF is uploaded.

You may have to redownload the documents to your computer directly, without making edits and then edit the documents once downloaded onto your computer. In the case of the Fillable PDF, you may have to download the file directly, open in Adobe and edit the PDF in Adobe.

We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused. This should resolve your issue and we are CLOSING your Service Request ticket.

*Please Note* If you need further assistance, please contact us at ITHelpCentral at nsf.gov<mailto:ITHelpCentral at nsf.gov> or via phone at 1-800-673-6188.

Best Regards,
IT Help Central Support

And this email arrived this morning from one of the other institutions involved in the collaborative:

Good morning All,

We received the final approval for submission of the proposal due tomorrow. If everyone is ready to submit, please let me know

As for printing the entire proposal, I’m not sure if we will be able to prior to submission. However, I was told that after it is submitted, with the assistance with the help desk, we can print it afterwards.
