[Flex] Fwd: Significant changes to the NSF Grant Proposal Guide

Hi Flex-ers -

We just sent this out to our PIs. I'm forwarding it to you in case you
find it helpful. I've been in a bit of a dither over what to do about
the Collabs/co-auths section; this is what I suggested for Chemistry -
the PIs continue to think of their Bios as before, and we (the APs) will
strip off and check collabs/co-auths, etc., and upload a Single Copy
document.

As for the Project Summary and special characters....as you may
remember, I was a big proponent of saying my Summary had special
characters in it, and uploading a PDF. I *swear* that even
non-"special" characters (", ?, etc.) would cause problems. I will have
to change my ways if I don't see superscripts and other truly "special"
characters, but I'm going to be aware that non-special characters may
cause me problems.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Best Regards,
Sheila

Hi Everyone,
Please note the changes below:
*Collaborators & Other Affiliations Information*, is a new single-copy
document that requires each senior project personnel to provide
information regarding collaborators and other affiliations. This
information used to be provided as part of the Biographical Sketch. The
new format no longer requires proposers to identify the total number of
collaborators and other affiliations when providing this information.

Please continue to submit this information on your biosketches--we will
remove that section and put it in the single copy documents section.
Although there is now more room on your biosketch, NSF only wants what
it asks for to appear, nothing additional. If there is anything
included on your biosketch that is not specifically requested by NSF,
we'll just delete it.

------

*Current and Pending Support*, has been revised to reflect that all
current project support should be listed in this section of the
proposal, including internal funds allocated toward specific projects.

We now have to list all funds allocated to you for specific activities.

------

*When to Submit Proposals*, has been updated to remove the ability to
use other than 5 p.m. submitter’s local time in solicitations. Failure
to submit by 5 p.m. submitter’s local time will result in the proposal
not being accepted.

They have now installed a time clock that closes the portal at exactly
5:00, so if Grants and Contracts gets bottle necked and your proposal
goes in at 5:00.01, it will be booted out.

------

*Project Summary*, has been modified to remind proposers that only
Project Summaries that use special characters may be uploaded in the
Supplementary Documents section. Such Project Summaries must contain
separate headings for Overview, Intellectual Merit and Broader Impacts
or the proposal will be returned without review.

You can't get around the word number limit by uploading the Project
Summary as a separate document anymore. Only Project Summaries with
special characters will be allowed to be uploaded in this manner.

------

*Special Information and Supplementary Documentation*, now specifies the
format that must be used for letters of collaboration.

This is the language:
Letters of collaboration should be limited to stating the intent to
collaborate and should not contain endorsements or evaluation of the
proposed project. The recommended format for letters of collaboration is
as follows:

"If the proposal submitted by Dr. [insert the full name of the
Principal Investigator] entitled [insert the proposal title] is
selected for funding by NSF, it is my intent to collaborate and/or
commit resources as detailed in the Project Description or the
Facilities, Equipment or Other Resources section of the
proposal."Letters of collaboration should be limited to stating the
intent to collaborate and should not contain endorsements or
evaluation of the proposed project. The recommended format for
letters of collaboration is as follows:

Please note that you should be describing any resources provided by
collaborators in the Facilities Statement.
