Dear Flexers -

This was the first that I had heard about ONR's "Hopper" system.
Admittedly, however, we do not submit a lot to ONR. I'm very sorry if
this is old news to you folks, but I thought it was an interesting
nugget of info to pass along.

Cheers to all -
Sheila

Hi Burkhard,

Planning letters need to come through the hopper. Below is the
information.

As many of you know the Ocean Modeling Program and the Physical
Oceanography Program merged with the latter name retained. We have a new
web page:

http://www.onr.navy.mil/sci_tech/ocean/322_processes/prog_po.htm

It provides a general description of the new program and thrusts.

We are planning to use this web page as the central way in which the
program announces opportunities and provides up dated information. I
would encourage you to check it regularly as we will normally not do
'mass' emailing in the future.

Most Importantly it provides the call for planning letters and links by
which you should send us your planning letter via the Hopper System.
We must have planning letters submitted this way to ensure that we can
track them and respond to them. The system is very easy, much like ftp.
Importantly (besides tracking the document), it allows you to send
larger files than we normally can accept in our mailboxes. When you
submit the planning letter, the system responds to let you know we got
it and it sends us a note saying "you've got mail". Proposal submission
will have a similar hopper. If you send it to us another way we will
likely ask that you resend via Hopper so that your planning
letter/proposal is automatically logged in. With the greatly enlarged
program created by the merger and reduced administrative help, we need
to rely on these automated systems to keep up with these processes.

With changes in DoD security procedures we have to use anonymous emails
addresses on the web (such as 322PO). These are linked to the team
leader and others, so your email will be received. Our old personal
emails still work as they always have and you can use these for regular
communication. If you do not get a confirmation shortly after submission
call and let us know. If you got the email it is in the 'Hopper". Many
other programs have used this system in the past couple of years and it
does appear to work very reliably.
