Bioinformatics, whoi-software, and Data-Mongers,
I'd like to announce two paper discussions next week:
*A taste of scientific workflows*
Two options, choose either or both flavors:
A discussion of Computing Workflows for Biologists: A Roadmap
<http://journals.plos.org/plosbiology/article?id=10.1371/journal.pbio.1002303>
by Shade and Teal (2015) PLOS Biology
(tastes like bioinformatics)
*Tuesday, Nov. 8, 11am - noon,**
**Redfield 204*
A discussion of Dynamic Reusable Workflows for Ocean Science
<http://www.mdpi.com/2077-1312/4/4/68>
by Signell et al. (2016) J. Mar. Sci. Eng.
(tastes like physical oceanography)
Rich Signell (USGS) will join us to demo the workflow and participate in
the conversation
*Thursday, Nov. 10, 1 - 2pm,**
**Clark 201*
Sponsored by WHOI’s Ocean Informatics initiative

All are welcome. Please read the paper ahead of time for a lively
discussion.
Note: to explain the concept of "scientific workflow" - these are all
the steps that you take to acquire, process, and analyze data. A
workflow can be documented as a series of steps, like a protocol which
you write out in words or diagram (e.g., first paper above), or it can
be an executable set of scripts that run in software (e.g., second paper
above).
