The next Informal Lunch Talk will be:
When: TODAY 12:00 pm, Monday, May 7, 2012
Where: Candle House 104/105, MBL
Who: Melissa Cragin, Directorate for Biological Sciences, NSF
Title: Data-in-Mind: Scaling up data activities in the BIO Directorate at the National Science Foundation
About the talk:
The Directorate for Biological Sciences at the National Science Foundation funds research on fundamental questions in biology, as well as infrastructure in support of that research. The recent “Big Data” event hosted by the President’s Office of Science and Technology Policy put the spotlight on zettabyte-scale, but solutions for management and use of smaller stores will continue to be the focus of many BIO programs. What are the questions driving policy activities related to data archiving at the NSF? How are programs in BIO working to form a coordinated data landscape? Join us for a conversation about current activities in the BIO directorate.
About the speaker:
Melissa Cragin is an AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellow, serving in the Directorate for Biological Sciences (Office of the Assistant Director) at NSF. Previous to entering the Fellows program, Melissa was a Research Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois in the Graduate School of Library and Information Science (GSLIS). She conducted research in the Center for Informatics Research in Science and Scholarship on data practices and scholarly communication, and led the development of the Data Curation Education Program at GSLIS.
The Monday Lunch talks are held every other Monday. We have created a wiki page for these and other Informatics events in Woods Hole. Please consider giving a talk. Let us know if you about any informatics related event and we will add it to this page. Those of you who haven't subscribed to the Informatics discussion list, you might want to.
