 Informal Lunch Talk TODAY:

When: Noon, Monday, January 10, 2011
Where: Redfield Auditorium on the WHOI Woods Hole Village campus (map). 
Who: Alex Dorsk from the MBLWHOI Library
Title: "Tools & Techniques for Cleaning Metadata."

Summary:
Metadata cleaning is the process of converting metadata records into a more usable form.  It is often needed when sharing information, re-using old information, or making information more accessible.

Metadata cleaning is an engineering process and requires balancing various constraints including time, quality, and flexibility.  Various tools and strategies can help reduce time and improve quality and flexibility.

Speaker Bio:
Alex Dorsk is a data/systems librarian in the MBLWHOI Library. He works with both historical and modern data sets in the WHOI data library, and is interested in the design of human/computer systems for working with data.  Alex manages MetaDetergent, a website devoted to cleaning metadata: http://metadetergent.drupalgardens.com
