[Data-Mongers] web sites for mobile phones

Hi All -
We present a lot of real time data on a little web page that's just
meant for use by members of our group who need to keep track
of instruments in the field. It's totally separate from our main site,
which serves both real time and archived data.
As more of us are traveling, and using cell phones to keep tabs
on the field work, we'd like to have a mobile-friendly version of
this internal site. The full html version includes a lot of images -
plots of recent data from a half dozen different projects, and while
these are small files, they're too much for the average mobile
user.
Has anyone looked into the best way to create a "lightweight"
site for mobile users? So far all I've done is to duplicate the real
time page without any images, but after a little reading I realize
we could do a lot more than this.
I'm not ready to start writing in WML or XHTML MP, but I'm
looking for a good summary of how to write "normal" pages
that are mobile-friendly. If you know about a good resource
for this, could you please pass it along? Or if you've designed
sites meant to be viewed on cell phones, that'd be helpful to know
too.
Thanks - Nan
