Hi Nan,

I imagine since this project was geared toward the social sciences, they
utilized data analysis products used widely in that area. "We have
focused on social science data, but aspects of what we have developed
may apply more widely," (King, 2007 - Sociol. Meth. and Res. 32(2)
pp.173-199). We can certainly talk to Merce about this.

Lisa

just wanted to call your attention to an upcoming special seminar about
a very exciting project that has been developed up at the Harvard
Institute for Quantitative Social Science and is related to efforts at
the Harvard-MIT Data Center.

THE DATAVERSE NETWORK: A DIGITAL LIBRARY FOR RESEARCH DATA
August 19, at 2:00 p.m. in the Bay Reading Room,
Lillie Building, MBL-WHOI Library

....
Contact: Lisa Raymond, ext. 3557

I thought this looked interesting too. It seems to allow you to upload
data,
which can then be subsetted and served from the project's server, while
more or less letting it appear to be on your own system. The down side, as
far as I can see (and I don't know more than I could learn with a dozen
or so
clicks) is that the data must be STATA or SPSS, both of which are
proprietary
commercial products. I guess that'll be a question for the speaker: why
they're not encouraging people to use formats in the public domain.

Maybe Lisa has more information about this - the project web site didn't
have
much of an overview about the options for data.

Cheers - Nan
