Lenses to Study the Virosphere: From Species to Individuals to Guilds within Viral Communities
Viruses are the most abundant biological entities on Earth and profoundly shape microbial ecosystems, biogeochemical cycles, and host-associated microbiomes. Yet studying viral ecology has long been difficult because most viruses cannot be cultured and lack universal marker genes. Advances in metagenomics now allow us to explore the virosphere through multiple ecological "lenses." In this talk, I will show how species-level analyses reveal that many double-stranded DNA viruses form discrete biological populations structured by gene flow. I will then discuss how population-level approaches uncover viral microdiversity and evolutionary dynamics among individual viral genomes. Finally, I will introduce viral predation guilds-groups of viruses that exploit the same microbial hosts-as a framework for understanding how viral communities are organized and function across diverse ecosystems.
