The Right Whale to Save: How Can Models Aid Endangered Species Management?
Critically endangered North Atlantic right whales are vulnerable to anthropogenic mortality and the impacts of climate change, threatening recovery. Further understanding the dynamics of prey resources, including the key copepod Calanus finmarchicus, can provide insight into the distribution of whale foraging grounds, helping scientists better understand where in the ocean right whales spend their time. Predictive models are a key component of the story, filling in gaps in the data collected by shipboard and aerial marine mammal surveys, and represent an important tool for effective conservation by helping managers understand where the whales might be when we aren't able to look for them.
